Google to unleash new Nexus 7 tablet and Android 4.3 at San Francisco event today?

There has been a lot of speculation that Google will unveil the next version of its popular Nexus 7 at an event in San Francisco being held later today.

We may even have seen what the second-generation, 7in slate looks like, courtesy of photos and video leaked to Android Central, and now a report from Taiwan indicates that the new Nexus 7 will go on sale at the end of July.

As widely expected, Google's new tablet will be manufactured by Asus, the maker of the original Nexus 7, DigiTimes reported this week. Interestingly, the Taiwan-based tech site reported that Asus had anticipated the release of a next-generation Nexus 7 in June, but Google pushed the release date back due to "concerns over first-generation Nexus 7 inventory."

That delay "greatly impacted Asustek's [financial] performance in the second quarter," DigiTimes cited unnamed sources as saying. The upshot for Asus is that the company is expecting a big third-quarter boost when the new Nexus 7 hits the market.

After shipping 5.7 million tablets in the first half of 2013, including its own branded products and first-generation Nexus 7 tablets, Asus is aiming to ship 6.3 million units in the second half, according to DigiTimes.

Last week's Android Central report also indicated that the second edition of the Nexus 7 will be made by Asus. According to a leaked spec sheet published by the site, the new tablet runs the yet-to-be-released Android 4.3, has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, and will come in 16GB and 32GB flavours.

Separately, Android Central said it had learned that Google will price a 16GB version of the tablet at $229 (?149) and a 32GB version at $269 (?175).

Some Google watchers also expect the company to release a new version of its mobile operating system today, but Android 4.3 is more likely than Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, which is rumoured for an October unveiling.
