He also teased a third version of the wildly popular Galaxy S handset series for the first half of 2012. A proclamation arriving on news that the delectabled Galaxy S II has just set a record for the fastest selling smartphone in Korea after unloading one million handsets in the first month of domestic sales.Naturally, Shin also had a bit to say about Samsung's ongoing legal battle with Apple. "We didn't copy Apple's design," he said bluntly, adding that Apple's allegations "will not be legally problematic." Sure Sammy, tell it to the judge.

Blanchett Criticised Over Carbon Campaign

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett is facing the wrath of her fellow Australians after signing up to promote a controversial new tax scheme in her native country.
The Elizabeth star appears in an advertising campaign urging voters Down Under to back the government's planned carbon tax, which would be levied on companies which contribute to pollution.
Many fear the tax will be passed along to families already struggling in the tough economic climate through a series of price rises, and National Party Senate Leader Barnaby Joyce, who opposes the tax, has criticised Blanchett for failing to understand the impact it will have on hard-up Australians.
He says, "It's very easy for people who have a good wage to suggest that we engage in a gesture which will have no effect, but the people who really pay the price are the ones who can't afford the fundamentals of life right now.
"I think that Cate Blanchett is a marvellous actor, a beautiful person and a wonderful Australian, but the relationship between that and a person who is, unfortunately, already doing it tough in their life, who's under the pump already because they can't afford their power bill... what do they get from the ad?"

This Memorial Day weekend, techno music and its fans come home ? to Detroit ? for the annual Movement Electronic Music Festival.
Today, most of techno's audience is in Europe. But its futuristic sound was nurtured by African-Americans in Detroit in the 1980s. It all started in the late '70s, when a Detroit radio DJ named Electrifying Mojo put music on the air in a way that had never been heard before in the city: Kraftwerk plus Jimi Hendrix; Rick James plus the B52s and Phillip Glass ? all on a spaceship.
Mojo's sci-fi persona dominated Detroit's urban radio back then. The pieces he assembled became the raw materials for techno. Juan Atkins is often called the first techno artist. In 1981, Atkins was 19 years-old and technology-obsessed. He co-produced a song called, "Alleys of Your Mind," on a rudimentary drum machine.
"Mojo dropped 'Alleys of your Mind' on his radio show and it just blew up," Atkins recalls. "It was like a breath of fresh air on the radio. And nobody knew that this was some black kids from Detroit making this record. They thought it was from Europe or somewhere."
?Through Mojo's radio show, the alien sounds of techno piqued the interest of Detroit natives ? but the music's largest audience quickly grew in Europe.
"I'm fortunate because I exported my business," says Carl Craig, one of techno's biggest ambassadors. "If I kept it in the U.S., we would have failed a long time ago."
In addition to making his own music, Craig runs a record label he started two decades ago in Detroit. Last year, it shipped nearly 20,000 vinyl records out of the city ? 70 percent went to Europe. Craig is a star in Berlin and Paris.
But in Detroit, his profile is low key, his studio an anonymous bunker near a slew of abandoned buildings. "You go around the block from here, there are buildings [where] the windows are blown out," he says. "They've been abandoned for 30 years." Craig says he stays in Detroit because it's cheap, but the city is also central to his creative process. "My music has always been for me a personal beautification of Detroit."
He's not the only one who sees possibility in the rubble. There's also a small but steady stream of "techno tourists" who visit Detroit. "We've had several people that have come from Germany, mostly from Europe, specifically for the techno scene here," says Nicole Staggg, who hosts visitors through www.couchsurfing.org.
They come to see the abandoned factories where techno parties happened, and to visit Detroit's techno landmark, Submerge ? an iconic label, studio, techno museum and record shop on Detroit's east side. Label manager Cornelius Harris says Submerge defies the negative trends in Detroit and in the music industry itself.
"The key with being able to function in Detroit is not to look at what it is, but to understand what's possible and to move from that place," Harris says. "People in music do it all the time. They do it every day, which is amazing to me. You've got this thing that doesn't exist and you bring it into existence. That's the definition of magic."
One of those musical pieces of magic, "Falling Up," by local artist Theo Parish, could be a metaphor for Detroit. Parish is a torchbearer for his city's music, but he hardly ever plays there. His regular gig is at a club called Plastic People ? in London.

Much of the material that showed up in the 4th (2008) edition of the PMBOK Guide has ALREADY been showing up on the PMP exam for several years ? e.g., PTA, TCPI, etc. PMBOK Guide 4th edition came out in December, 2008, but these topics have been showing up on the PMP exam as early as 2006. The group at PMI that develops the standards (such the PMBOK Guide, the Standard for Risk Management, etc.) and the group at PMI that develops the the certifications and their corresponding exams (such as PMP, CAPM, PMI-SP, etc.) are two separate groups that DO NOT interface with each other. They are two separate groups. If anything, the standards group looks at the work that the credential group (PMP, CAPM) does and uses it as one of the many inputs for what they put into the standards such as the PMBOK Guide.
A reviewer here, on Amazon, observed that there is a widely held notion that PMBOK = Project Management. I disagree with that observation. The false notion he observed is only held by those people who do not know what the PMBOK is. Also ?PMBOK? is not the same as ?PMBOK Guide.? PMBOK is an acronym for the Project Management Body of Knowledge. As I said, above, there is no single document that contains the project management body of knowledge. It?s simply the body of knowledge that is collectively known among practitioners. academics and organizations who practice or research project management. The document known as the PMBOK Guide is simply a guide to that massive body of knowledge; an entry-point to further information and a standard for developing protocols, methodologies, techniques and practices within your own organizations and project management practices.
The PMBOK Guide is a reference work, not a text book or a study guide. It?s not meant as an introduction to project management any more than a volume of statutes is meant to be used as an introduction to the practice of law or the Physician?s Desk Reference (PDR) is mean to be used as an introduction to pharmacology for doctors and pharmacists. As with technical references for other professions (such as statute books for lawyers, clinical references for doctors, etc.), non professionals may find the PMBOK Guide difficult to follow and even dry. An experienced and trained project manager should find the PMBOK Guide perfectly understandable and not very difficult to follow. An experienced and professional project manager looking at the PMBOK Guide for the first time may find its format unfamiliar (at first), but he/she should find the material and the concepts in the document familiar (though organized in a way they may not be used to).
On the other hand, an entry-level project manager, or a non-project manager who is thrown into project management tasks may, indeed, find the PMBOK Guide difficult to follow and difficult to understand. This is not unlike a sophomore accounting student opening up a set of GAAP or IFRS guidelines and finding it hard to follow or finding the writing style very didactic and anything but light reading, while this would NOT be the experience of a certified CPA or an experienced accountant or financial professional.
Very important: The PMBOK Guide is not an I.T. text nor should it be considered part of the literature covering the topic of information technology. For some reason, the document is shelved in book stores along with I.T. books. It really should be shelved with books on management. In the same way, PMP examination study guides are also shelved next to I.T. books. The PMP credential is not an I.T. ?cert.? In fact, it?s not even in the same class or category of ?certifications? as technical and I.T. ?certs.? The PMP is a professional credential, in the same category of certifications for other professions, such as accounting, law or medicine. Unlike I.T. ?certs?, where the only requirement to earn the certification is the ability to make an appointment at the Prometric center and where the only criteria for earning the certification is the ability to pass a test, the PMP credential has experience, education, continuing education & professional contribution requirements. There is also a requirement to adhere to a professional code of conduct.
Because of the ?cert? fever within the I.T. community and among I.T. workers, many non-PMs in the I.T. sector are pressured to add the ?PMP? letters to their names. Recruiters are among those who create this pressure. Because they are not experienced project managers, these I.T. people are pressured into lying about their background and skills during the PMP qualification process ? and getting friends to lie during the audit and vetting process. This may account for the number of (dishonestly earned) PMPs out there who may have the letters after their name (though they got those letters under false pretenses) but who are not really project managers at all. This is why people see a lot of ?PMPs? who have no idea about what they are doing.
Project management is a profession. While there are many professional project managers out there practicing their profession, there are quite a lot of non-project managers who have been thrown into PM responsibilities and roles. While they do, indeed, hold a ?job? as a ?project manager? and are being asked to perform the tasks of a project manager (and may even have a title called ?project manager:), they are not project managers. They?re just people who have been asked to do the work of project managers.
The PMP credential is not for people want to move into project management. It?s for people who ALREADY ARE project managers and have been for several years. The PMP credential verifies that the individual has the education, years of experience, professional training, adherence to a professional code of ethics, commitment to ongoing continuing education and commitment to ongoing contributions to the project management profession. The exam portion of the credential verifies that, in addition to all of the above, the individual has an understanding of the profession he/she has been practices; that the individual knows that project management is NOT common sense and that he/she is not managing project by seat of his/her pants or via intuition; that the individual understands that sound project management is based on the past experiences of other members of the profession, based on research and sound empirical (scientific) study; that the ?art? and practice of project management is based on science, not intuition.
Finally, as to the question ?what would be the best alternative book?: there is no alternative. The PMBOK Guide is the accepted global standard and the recognized guide to the project management body of knowledge. That?s all it?s intended to be and it serves that purpose well. It?s not the end to all ends. The members of the project management profession who contributed to the document did not aspire to cover all there is to know about project management. It?s not perfect and it?s constantly changing (every 4 years) as the profession continues to grow and mature.
You can (and should) supplement the PMBOK Guide with other PMI standards and frameworks ? e.g., The Standard for Program Management, The Project Manager Comptency Development Framework, The Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures, etc. There are supplemental standards and frameworks developed by other professional and academic organizations as well. However, as the GUIDE to the ?body of knowledge? within the profession, the PMBOK Guide is the standard. There are other books and sources on other topics of project management, including sources on methodologies, leadership, PM tools, general management, the management of people, budgeting, scheduling, quality management practices, organizational behavior, etc. as well as industry specific literature on project management, such as marketing project management, I.T. project management, construction project management, research & development project management, etc. However, such topics are outside the scope and purpose of the PMBOK Guide. Of course, since anywhere from 60% ? 70% of the material in the examination portion of the PMP certification either comes directly from the PMBOK Guide or requires understanding of the concepts in the PMP Guide, a knowledge of the material in the document is important to anyone who is planning to sit for the exam. So, while the PMBOK Guide is NOT a study guide for the exam and is not intended to serve as such, familiarity with it is important part of both practicing the PM profession as well as earning the profession?s certification.

Science Publishes ?Arsenic is Life? Critiques. Game On.
Alert readers will remember the scuffle that broke out last summer December over the ?arsenic-is-life? paper by Felisa Wolfe-Simon and colleagues that claimed to have found that a bacterium from Mono Lake had been coaxed into substituting arsenic for phosphorous in its DNA. Many, including me, criticized both the paper and its presentation: the paper for making claims that seemed to be beyond the evidence; the presentation ? particularly the high-profile press conference followed by a refusal to engage critics and journalists ? for hype and a refusal to answer legitimate critiques. I chimed in several times; Carl Zimmer rounded up some withering critiques and then some more;?the Guardian ably tracked it, as did the Knight Science Journalism Tracker; and in probably the best single round-up, Ed Yong wrapped up his own and other coverage.
Then a long silence ensued, broken by brief skirmishes. Now, it seems the battle is re-engaged. Though the paper was never officially published (it remained online, but was never published in print), Science has now published a number of peer-reviewed responses to the paper, as well as responses to the responses.
It?s quite a package, and I?ve not read it in full. But the accompanying post at Science Insider sums up the differences nicely, in a way that matches my quick read:
Several of the Technical Comments question whether contamination or background levels of phosphorus in the cultures could have fueled this growth. Another researcher worries that the DNA that was described as likely having arsenic incorporated in its structure might have been contaminated. Others suggest that arsenic compounds are too unstable to replace phosphorus compounds and be functional. ?Their hypothesis that this microorganism contains DNA and other standard biomolecules in which arsenate atoms replace phosphorus atoms would, if true, set aside nearly a century of chemical data concerning arsenate and phosphate molecules,? writes?Steven Benner, an astrobiologist at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution in Gainesville, Florida, in one of the Technical Comments
Wolfe-Simon?s team has acknowledged that there were indeed trace amounts of phosphorus in the media used, contributed by mineral salts?they even noted this in their paper. But Wolfe-Simons maintains there was not enough background phosphorus to drive the bacterial growth.
University of British Columbia microbiologist?Rosie Redfield, the blogger most critical of Wolfe-Simon both personally and professionally, asserts in one of the Technical Comments that Wolfe-Simon did not go far enough in purifying DNA from GFAJ-1 before testing it for its arsenic components.
The issue of whether arsenic-containing molecules would be stable in a cell is the subject of three of the Technical Comments. In the cytoplasm, arsenate would be reduced to arsenite, which would not be able to substitute for phosphate, Barbara Schoepp-Cothenet, from the?Bio?nerg?tique et Ing?nierie des Prot?ines in Marseilles, France, and colleagues, claim in one comment. Moreover, phosphates are incorporated into DNA early in a multistep process, and an arsenic substitute would be unlikely to survive that process intact, notes Benner.
In a response accompanying the Technical Comments, Wolfe-Simon and her co-authors point to work by others that suggests that these arsenic compounds would last longer when part of large biomolecules. Her group has proposed that the bacterium might sequester the arsenic compounds to protect them from breaking down. ?In the comments, there were lots of good points that were raised,? says Wolfe-Simon?s co-author Samuel Webb, a biogeochemist at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource in Menlo Park, California. ?With anything this intriguing or controversial, there will always be multiple sides.?
If you count it up, it?s nays to 1 yea ? but that?s before the rejoinder from Wolfe-Simon and her 11 co-authors, which makes it (sort of) 11-12. This sort of biochemistry is not my fort?, so I?m ill-qualified to pass judgment on the more technical aspects of this rather technical debate. Wolfe-Simon et alia appear to address some of the criticisms, but I?ll leave it to others to judge whether they do accurately. (For instance, to the widely held objection that the experiment may have been contaminated by signficant levels of phosphorous in the goo in which they lived ? drawing phosphorous there, rather than living on the arsenic, in essence ? FWS et alia claim a control experiment safely eliminates that possibility. Beyond me to say whether that?s convincing to their peers. I imagine we?ll hear soon.)
Suffice to say that rather than being decisively settled, this battle has merely rejoined, this time with more substance on the table. As I?ve only just downloaded these, I?m far from making up my mind on whether the Wolfe-Simon case now looks stronger or weaker ? and I?m not really qualified to make that call anyway. I?ll try to keep track here, but as I?m going on vacation next week, I won?t track this story then. But I imagine that some of those who tracked this earlier, such as Carl Zimmer and Ed Yong, will do some tracking. And you can probably follow this productively by tracking the #arsenicislife tag on Twitter, where Yong?s stream will likely keep tabs on it. Drink coffee. Tracking this thing is practically a full-time job.

*NB: These were peer-reviewed responses, and we don?t know the details of the peer-review process, which is quite opaque, and came under heavy fire. (Rightly, I think; I?m among those who feel Science should have asked for move evidence for claims this extraordinary, and, given the outcry, should have explained how it reviewed the paper.) We don?t know much more about how this round went either. I would suspect and hope that Science would lean toward publishing critiques, given the prior outcry. On the other hand, there?s a strong history in scientific publishing of NOT publishing harsh critiques, even sometimes sound ones, and ? the real bugbears ? there?s no way to know how they went about things or how many supportive or critical responses they did not publish.

Top 5 Rules that Kill Storytelling | Jen Karin Writes
This past Monday, I caught up with a friend and author to have a cuppa and exchange critiques on our current projects. Both of us have been writers for a long time, and know enough about the editing process to provide guidance without squashing the intentions of the writer. It was a helpful morning, both professionally and socially. We will need each other as we head into the realm of agents, rejections, agreements, and reviews.
On the way home, I thought a lot about the subjectivity and, let?s face it, absurdity of the publishing machine, and how trends in publishing compound the absurdity with arbitrary rules about writing, pitching, and selling your work.
As an opinion columnist, it?s hard for me to observe these absurdities without speaking up, especially since I believe many of these rules are killing the story.
There are many to list, but here?s my top 5 rules to break:
Perfect Sentence Structure
Once you learn the rules of grammar, break them. Make them work for you; bend them to your creative will; dedicate your Pulitzer to your fourth-grade teacher. Don?t be sloppy, but don?t be rigid. Why break the rules of perfect sentence structure? Style. Style is what will set your storytelling voice apart from everyone else?s. If we all wrote the same way, following the same rules, here?s what we would hear from readers: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. For example, I use sentence fragments. Love sentence fragments. Love fragments. Love. They work for me. And if crafted carefully, I have faith that my readers will understand and feel the experience I am creating for them without the proper subject-verb relationship.
Adverb Obliteration
Seriously, why all the hate toward adverbs??If you are new to creative writing, you will most likely hear, ?Don?t use adverbs; adverbs are a sign of lazy writing.? While the advice has merit, the trend to write without adverbs is just that?a trend. You wouldn?t write like Oscar Wilde today, and years from now a new style will be ?in.? Writing should reflect how we speak, and guess what? People use adverbs. So challenge yourself to write without relying on adverbs, but the idea that all adverbs should be obliterated is, simply, silly.
Word Count
I currently have a young adult (YA) manuscript that clocks in at 51,000 words?pretty much on target. But if I want that same story to be picked up by a publisher for the mainstream adult market, I would need to boost that word count to 80,000. And if that same story might be appropriate for the sci-fi fantasy market, that word count needs to jump to 100,000. But be careful! Another talented author friend of mine was told to shave her word count, so her novel would fit on Wal-Mart?s shelves. How many words should your novel be? As many as it takes to tell the story.
Copycat Writing
Publishers want to publish books they know will sell. And who can blame them? It?s a business, after all. How do they know certain books will sell? Because, in a way, they?ve already sold them. You see, they select writers and stories that are very similar to bestsellers from other authors. And they incorporate the help of these bestselling authors to help sell the newest author with lovely quotes on the back of the book. Even book covers are designed to create a connection between an established author and a new author. Don?t model your writing after someone else?s. You?re much too special for that.
Writing for a Market
Each genre has its rules of engagement, again based on successful formulas. That does not mean readers can?t consume, appreciate, and enjoy stories that cross genres or markets. Book-club moms don?t always have to read about domestic heartaches, single women in their twenties deserve more than chick lit, sci-fi loving geeks can get teary eyed over a romance. I love stories that cross the median. My brain jumps around from humorous situations to political conspiracies to literary thoughts to advertising headlines, and so do my book ideas.

So, what rules should you follow? Write the story that?s inside of you. Be true to that story. Write it the best way you can. Period.
If you do, I know you will find a publisher who will be glad you broke the other rules.

Avian Review: National Geographic Mini-guides

Basics:? softcover; 12-volume series of small (6 x 4 inches) photo guides with about 270 pages; each book addresses 160-170 of the states' more commonly seen or notable birds of which 125 are shown in very nice photographs; geared towards the casual or beginning birder and towards any birder that may like nice photos; basic text covers description, habitat, and behavior; 4-colored range map provided for each bird
A set of books can be alluring, sometimes more so merely because it is a "set" that is involved.? Something created in a "set" implies that collecting should take place; thus, we (at least, I) buy them.? This quirky obsession is probably shared to some degree by other birders who practice collecting habits through the maintenance of a yard list, a state list, a life list, a hit-by-the-car list, or some other variation.
National Geographic has created a set of books, a dozen to be exact, where each introduces the reader to birds of a particular state.? Each book carries a similar title -- "Field Guide to Birds: (insert state name here)".? The dozen books actually cover 15 states.? Three of the books address two states each (e.g., AZ & NM, WA & OR, NC & SC).? See a map below of the states included within these books.
What's shown inside these small-sized books? ?
?Each little book, or booklet, contains 160-170 birds (about 30-40% of all birds found in the state).? Only 125 are shown with a photograph.? These 125 "core" birds are displayed in a single, good quality, color photograph that covers between a half and a full page.? Nearly every bird is shown by only one individual which is typically the adult breeding male.? Although this can help make for a colorful book, it also acts as one of the elements preventing this book from being a complete field guide for any state. ?Besides showing only 30-40% of the state's birds, these books show only 20-40% of the plumages one could expect to see in the field.
The remaining 50-60 species not shown in a photo might be deemed as "token" inclusions.? These additional birds are illustrated in tiny (2-3cm) color drawings tucked in the lower corner of the page.? These extra birds are typically a species similar to or reminiscent of the one shown in the adjacent photo.? Examples would include pairings such as Summer and Scarlet Tanager; Common Yellowthroat and Yellow-breasted Chat; or White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows.
As one might expect, many of the same species are shown in several different books.? This is notable for wide ranging birds such as the Yellow-rumped Warbler and Red-winged Blackbird.? However, it should be pointed out the exact same photo for many of the birds is recycled through different books.? At the extreme, 63 of the photos in the New Jersey book are also found in the New York book.? That's half of the photos.? To me, this equates to buying one-and-a-half books for the price of two.? I recognize the financial and logistical ease of doing this, but it would have been nice to at least provide us with different photos of the Northern Cardinal or the Slate-colored Junco or the other 61 birds.? There are so many other good photos that could have been displayed.What's included in the text for each bird??
?For each photographed bird, general material is provided that covers field marks, behavior, voice, habitat, and regions of the states where the bird is typically found.? The field marks are relatively simple, short comments aimed at providing a minimal description to the novice birder.? Where appropriate, descriptions are given for each the male and female plumages.? A few other comments are usually provided on particular behaviors such as nesting, food, displays, or vocalizations.? A few short lines also address habitat.
Each of these birds is accompanied by a range map of the state.? Four different colors in the map represent breeding (red), winter (blue), migration (green), and year-round (purple).? Additional information on location includes references to a few local sites where the bird may be found.? This often?lists specific names of places such as "Marsh Creek State Park"; or, perhaps a?more generalized area like "Pocono Mountains".? Sometimes, the location is more generalized such as "in forest, woodlands, and suburban parks everywhere."
Regarding the tiny birds painted in the corner of the page, the briefest of notes is provided to draw attention to their similarity to the adjacent photographed bird.? These notes provide a few descriptive comments along with maybe a note or two on their habitat and range.
Is it worth buying all 12 books??
?Unless you're into collecting bird books, there is probably no strong reason to purchase all twelve.? I say this because even with all twelve at hand, they will not help identify all the birds of the US.? But, that was not the designed purpose of these books.? Although nowhere is it stated as such, there seems to be two key aims for each book.
One, is to provide the beginning or casual birder a highly attractive series of photographs that would hopefully capture the person's birding interest as well as to strengthen it.? Two, is to show many of the more commonly seen birds that may be encountered and to provide information on how to identify the birds.? If those were the two aims, then National Geographic did a good job.? If they weren't, well, they're welcome to use my thoughts for marketing.
Who will appreciate these books the most??
?This guide will appeal more to the casual or novice birder.? It will also be useful to those people who take a fascination with the common local birds that visit their feeders or birds that may be seen during a walk through a local park.? I recommend giving this book to a beginning birders to encourage their interest without overwhelming them with the hundreds of species (and thousands of plumages) that exist.? Start them off?easy with this simplified but attractive guide.
You should consider this compact book to be a beginner's guide that will serve as a nice "first book" for the newly indoctrinated birder.? For the more experienced or even semi-serious birder with a greater focus on identification, the limited scope of this book may be disappointing.? If a more complete identification is the goal, there are other photo-guides that show all the species plus multiple plumages for gender, age, seasons, and race.
These books are not the perfect field guide but they are a great practice tool for anyone beginning their foray into the birding world.
How do these compare to the other set of state-oriented books by Tekiela??
?Stan Tekiela has created a sort of mass production machine with photo guides dedicated to each US state.? As of 2011, he's created a small bird book for all but 5 states (NV, NH, RI, VT, WY).? Plus, he has?many more on mammals, herps, trees, and flowers.
These books are very similar in nature to the National Geographic books; however, Tekiela's books show more species for the state. Like National Geographic, they display only one plumage which is typically the adult breeding male.One distraction with Tekiela's books is the "cookie cutter" approach with some birds.? As an example, the widespread Yellow-rumped Warbler is shown in many books which is to be expected.? However, it is the "Myrtle" race that represents this species, even in some of the western states where the "Audubon's" race dominates.? This same mistake is done to other species/subspecies as well.? To me, it gives an appearance of simply rotating pictures a bit and producing a new cover to the book with a different state's name.? Ah, but that does sound familiar?with the 63 photos shared between the New Jersey and the New York books mentioned earlier!
The text is similar and is geared towards the beginning or casual birder.? I've found these books to be a handy and appreciated gifts for kids.? The photos are attractive and they're simple enough to start them off learning the birds.? Even the non-birding parents will enjoy the photos.

All of these books are nice little works.
