Will Jane Lynch emcee the Emmys?

This year's Emmy Awards air on FOX and the TV academy is reported to be in discussions with one of that net's star players -- Jane Lynch of "Glee" -- to host the Sept. 18th kudocast. Last year, Lynch won Best Supporting Comedy Actress for the first season of the show. Were she to win again this year, she would be the first host to pick up an Emmy since Tom Selleck won Best Drama Actor for "Magnum P.I." while presiding over the 36th annual awards in 1994.

As of late, the emcee of the Emmys has been drawn from the talent pool of the presenting network. Last year, NBC showcased their new late night star Jimmy Fallon, the year before CBS used Neil Patrick Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" to host. The last time the Emmys were on FOX was in 2007 and Ryan Seacrest, who presides over ratings juggernaut "American Idol" for the network, was the solo host. The following year, ABC tapped Seacrest and the rest of the nominees in the newly-created Reality Show Host category to co-host and the result was one of the worst-reviewed Emmycasts ever.

Were she to get the gig, Lynch would be only the third woman to do so solo in the 63-year history of the Emmys. The first was Angela Lansbury in 1993 on ABC and the second was Ellen DeGeneres in both 2001 and 2005 on CBS. The first woman to co-host was Lucille Ball with her then-husband Desi Arnaz at the 4th awards while the most recent was Heidi Klum at that ill-fated 2008 Emmycast.

Last year, Lynch and the kids of "Glee" took part in the spirited opening of the Emmys.
