Murray beats curfew, Cilic wins second longest match

Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon fourth round on Saturday with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Marcos Baghdatis in a match which finished just past the 11:00pm Centre Court curfew.

The fourth seed will face Croatia's Marin Cilic, who clinched victory over Sam Querrey in the second longest match in tournament history, on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals.

On another day of high drama at the All England Club, three-time finalist Andy Roddick was knocked out, a defeat which sparked more questions over his future in the sport.

Scotsman Murray, asemi-finalist for the last three years, triumphed at 11:02pm (2202 GMT) under the roof on Centre Court, two minutes beyond the deadline set by the local municipality for health and safety reasons.

It was the latest-ever finish at the All England Club.

Murray had broken to lead 5-1 just as the clock hit 11:00pm and was allowed to serve out the match.

"When I got up at 4-1 I tried not to sit down. I don't know what the rules are, maybe the first time that's happened here," he said.

"Tough conditions. I was really struggling. I struck the ball a bit better under the roof and served better."

Murray took the first set 7-5 before Baghdatis levelled then tie by taking the second 6-3.

Just after 9:00pm (2000 GMT), play was stopped as the roof was closed, a process which took around half an hour.

On the resumption, Baghdatis broke in the third set for a 3-2 lead before Murray survived a nasty-looking fall to level at 4-4.

At 5-5 in the third set, Murray was docked a second point after his spare ball fell from his pocket onto the court during a rally for the third time.

He shrugged off that setback to take the set and start his race against time to finish the match which he did -- but only just -- against a physically wilting Baghdatis.

David Ferrer came back from a set down to clinch a 2-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Roddick and goes on to face 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.

But it was Roddick's farewell gesture to Centre Court which was the talking point.

The 29-year-old applauded all four sides of the court, blowing a kiss to the fans, many of whom would have witnessed his three agonising final defeats to Roger Federer in 2004, 2005 and 2009.

That last loss, an epic five-setter, which ended 16-14 in the final set, was Roddick's last memorable campaign at the All England Club.

He lost in the last 16 in 2010, the third round last year and Saturday's loss, also in the third round, will only increase speculation over the former world number one's career.

"I don't have a definitive answer, I can't give you much else," said 2003 US Open champion Roddick, when asked if Saturday was his last farewell to Wimbledon.

Croatian 16th seed Cilic reached the last 16 for the second time in spectacular style with a 7-6 (8/6), 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 6-7 (3/7), 17-15 win over unseeded American Sam Querrey.

At five hours and 31 minutes, it was the second longest match in Wimbledon history.

At least the United States had the consolation of seeing two men into the last 16 -- Mardy Fish and Brian Baker.

Tenth seed Fish, a quarter-finalist last year and playing his first tournament since undergoing a heart operation, beat Belgian wildcard David Goffin 6-3, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (8/6).

Fish will face French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a semi-finalist in 2011, who defeated Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Qualifier Baker's fairytale return hit a new high when he enjoyed a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over France's Benoit Paire.

Baker lost six years of his career to an assortment of injuries that left him needing five different operations on a hernia, left and right hips and his right elbow.

"It's been unreal," said Baker, who took a job as a college tennis coach to maintain his feel for the sport during his lengthy lay-off.

Czech world 100 Lukas Rosol, who had caused one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport when he beat world number two Rafael Nadal in five sets in the second round under the Centre Court roof on Thursday, was knocked out.

On a windswept Court 12, normal service was resumed as German 27th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber eased to a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) win.

Kohlschreiber will tackle Baker for a place in the quarter-finals.

Del Potro defeated Kei Nishikori, the first Japanese man since 1995 to reach the third round, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 and will face Ferrer.

How Do You Win At Home-Based Business? Hit The Floor ...

Just about every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it need to run more quickly than the fastest lion? or? it is going to be killed.

Every single morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle? or? it?s going to starve to death.

It does not matter no matter whether you are a gazelle or a lion, when the sun comes up? you far better be operating.

****

With no boss breathing down your neck or clock to punch, It could be so tempting to remain in bed 1 hour longer, to postpone choosing up the telephone and contacting that prospect, or to concentrate your time and energy on the straightforward and enjoyable stuff and place the unpleasant stuff off till later.

One of the core competencies you?ll need to succeed at home-based business enterprise is DISCIPLINE. You?re now accountable for your good results 24/7 and should you are not doing what is required to succeed, there won?t be an individual to come along behind you and clean up your mess. It really is do or die, consume or be eaten.

To genuinely succeed as a significant home-based small business owner, you need to be strong-willed and self-disciplined. You also require a solid, thorough, written plan to keep you on track and in continual motion.

To make sure continuous momentum, you are able to program your daily activities a month in advance, or even weekly. Many people prefer to dedicate each day with the week to a distinctive task, by way of example:

Monday ? advertising and marketing
Tuesday ? company creating
Wednesday ? client relations

? and so on.

Others choose to perform several different tasks on any given day, by way of example:

Monday ? marketing and advertising (morning), business enterprise building (afternoon)
Tuesday ? customers relations (morning), business study (afternoon)

One of the most essential element right here is have a Strategy and stick to it.

While many people start out a home-based enterprise to make freedom, many of them fail to recognize the essential significance of a structured strategy.

No plan = no organization and no small business = no freedom.

So recall, hit the floor operating every morning, maintain ahead of people who are following behind and overtake those in front of you. Regardless of whether you happen to be the lion or the gazelle, you?ve got to run!

Much a-Youuu about nothing? Obama zinger gets buzz

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Were they booing the president? Or were they "Youuuk-ing" him?

In a sensitive campaign season where every headline matters, it depends on who is doing the construuu-ing.

Let's start with President Barack Obama, who was working for votes on Monday in Boston, the home territory of Republican rival Mitt Romney.

As he was just getting warmed up in a campaign speech, Obama uncorked something of a wild pitch.

He jokingly thanked the city for trading Kevin Youkilis ? a gritty, beloved, core player for the Boston Red Sox for years ? to Obama's hometown Chicago White Sox this week.

The crowd began booing, in a loud but seemingly good-natured, defend-our-team kind of way.

"I'm just saying," a smiling Obama told the audience at Symphony Hall. "I didn't think I'd get any boos out of here. I guess I should not have brought up baseball. My mistake."

When Obama ended the riff by conceding, "You've got to know your crowd," he was rewarded with some laughter.

Someone helped him recover by shouting from the crowd, "We still love you!"

Not so fast, according to Romney's camp.

In a daily email blast to reporters on Tuesday, Romney press secretary Andrea Saul led off by accusing Obama of having taunted Red Sox fans. She lumped it in with some of the most gut-wrenching setbacks in Red Sox history.

"Maybe the president should have congratulated the team for winning the World Series in 2004 and 2007," she wrote. "Instead, he chose to mock them for trading away one of its favorite players at a time when the team is struggling."

(Actually, the team has a winning record and has won seven of its last 10 games.)

Lest a negative story go unchallenged, enter Jay Carney, the White House press secretary and a big Red Sox fan.

Unprompted, Carney told reporters traveling with the president that there had been some "really silly reporting" about the episode.

He commended his boss for refusing to cater to Red Sox Nation and gently chided those who couldn't tell a diss of the president from the calling of a player's nickname.

"Anyone who knows Boston, and anyone who was in that room last night knows that the preponderance of people shouting in response to what the president said about Kevin Youkilis were saying 'Yoooouk' and not 'Booo,' for God's sake," Carney said.

As the debate moved to Twitter, the White House was not letting go.

Let's have some clarity, Carney tweeted: "Some booed. Others, like me, cried 'Yoooouk!' in sad memoriam."

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer couldn't resist taking a shot at the media about the whole incident.

He said the general reaction from the press was to depict the moment as a gaffe for Obama when in fact, he said, the president stood by his team ? the White Sox ? and refused to pander to the home crowd.

"True sports fans understand loyalty," Pfeiffer tweeted.

Oh, and Youkilis?

The new White Sox third baseman told reporters that he and his family got a kick out of Obama's comments.

"It's probably a better way to get mentioned by the president than other ways," he said. "So that's a good thing."

(AP) ? The depiction of Jerry Sandusky on a well-known mural across the street from the Penn State campus has been replaced by an image of a poet and activist draped with a blue ribbon ? a symbol for awareness of child sexual abuse.

It was artist Michael Pilato's latest step in erasing the image of the disgraced former assistant football coach following Sandusky's conviction last week on 45 counts at his child sex abuse trial.

Sandusky was removed from the mural days after his arrest in November. But Pilato returned to the work on Sunday, painting in Dora McQuaid, a Penn State graduate who is a poet and an advocate for domestic and sexual violence victims and issues. The blue ribbon was added on Monday.

Also replacing Sandusky were two red handprints ? one belonging to Ann Van Kuren, one of the 12 jurors who convicted Sandusky, and the other belonging to a sexual abuse victim.

Meanwhile, as Sandusky insisted through a lawyer Monday that he was not guilty, Van Kuren said she hoped the verdict would help his accusers heal.

Van Kuren said the jury found the testimony of the eight victims who took the witness stand compelling, and they weighed the accounts and evidence diligently before finding Sandusky guilty last week of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years. She expressed empathy for the young men who offered emotional and explicit testimony.

"I really feel for the victims and any other victims that are out there that haven't come forward and told their" stories, Van Kuren told The Associated Press. "I'm hoping that this trial, with this verdict, will help them heal."

The sweeping sex abuse case rocked the Penn State community and the resulting scandal led to the ousters of Sandusky's former boss ? Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno ? and the university's president. It also forced a re-examination of the role that college administrators played in reporting abuse allegations.

Sandusky, 68, is under observation at the Centre County jail, where he is being kept away from other inmates pending a psychological review that will help determine the next step toward his sentencing in about three months.

"He's defiant and wants the truth to be told. He wants people to know that he's not guilty," said lawyer Karl Rominger, who visited his incarcerated client Monday.

Also Monday, Judge John Cleland ordered county probation officers to evaluate whether Sandusky is a sexual predator, a finding that could factor into his prison placement. Such orders are pro forma in sex abuse cases. Sex offenders are required to undergo treatment while in prison, so Sandusky, if deemed a predator, would likely be sent to a facility with such a program.

Rominger told the AP that Sandusky said that he's not suicidal and that he wants to get the separate psychological examination done so that he can receive visits from his friends and family.

The state investigation into Sandusky didn't begin until after the ex-coach was barred from a high school in 2009 when a mother complained about him. At the time, Gov. Tom Corbett was the state attorney general. Charges were filed in November 2011.

Investigators took into account Sandusky's status as a celebrated assistant coach in building the case, Corbett said Monday when asked in Harrisburg why charges weren't filed after the first accuser came forward.

"If it's one-on-one and now put the celebrity status in, put (that) Jerry Sandusky is loved by everybody... how can anybody say there must be something wrong?" Corbett said. "You'd better corroborate it, and that's what they started doing. They started pulling strings and gathering and gathering and gathering, and that's my experience. You build those cases, as well as you can."

Sandusky has repeatedly maintained his innocence. He will likely die in prison given mandatory minimum sentencing requirements.

The conviction is only just the start of possibly years of legal proceedings over the case. Besides appeals, there remains an active investigation into Sandusky by the state attorney general's office as well as a federal investigation.

Corbett said Penn State trustees are still awaiting the results of an internal investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh into the school's handling of the Sandusky case.

The university could also face a wave of new lawsuits. An hour after the verdict Friday night, Penn State said in a statement it was inviting victims to "participate in a program to facilitate the resolution of claims against the university arising out of Mr. Sandusky's conduct." The school said it sought to address victims' concerns privately, expeditiously and fairly.

Asked to clarify Monday, school spokesman Dave LaTorre said the university won't discuss details about litigation or how much money might be set aside for potential settlements, and he declined to comment further.

Kris Humphries Under Oath: Only Friends with Myla Sinanaj!

Kris Humphries was deposed by Kim Kardashian's legal team yesterday, as the divorce case between this former couple hopefully nears an end.

Under oath, the power forward reportedly swore that he never actually dated Myla Sinanaj, a NYC hotel employee who has suddenly become a key player because Kardashian believes Kris' relationship with her shoots down his case of supposed heartbreak.

TMZ insiders say Kris told lawyers that he and Myla were only friends and he never revealed anything specific about Kim to her.

Kris Humphries Photograph

Other sources contradict this claim, however, with one alleging that Humphries opened up to Sinanaj about Kanye West and his suspicions that the rapper was getting it on with Kardashian.

Humphries is basing his case for more money from Kim on the accusation that she defrauded him into marriage and never had any intention of making the union work. But he offered no evidence for this assertion during his deposition, witnesses tell TMZ.

Up next, or in the near future, Sinanaj will answer questions, while Reggie Bush may even be dragged into this ridiculous mess.

Pollutants may contribute to illness and becoming overweight

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Lack of physical activity and poor diet alone cannot explain the dramatic rise in obesity and diabetes occurring in many countries, believe some researchers. It is time to face the possibility that hazardous chemicals may also share part of the blame.

The population of the Western world is increasingly falling prey to metabolic syndrome, which is the name for a group of risk factors -- such as overweight and insulin resistance -- that occur together and increase the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and type-2 diabetes.

What can explain this sharp upsurge in the incidence of metabolic syndrome? Both genetics and environmental factors such as diet and physical exercise play a part, but researchers are still missing some key pieces to the puzzle.

"Many studies now indicate that persistent organic pollutants play a major role," says Jerome Ruzzin, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Bergen.

From fatty foods

For several years, Dr Ruzzin has been receiving funding from the Research Council of Norway's Programme on Environmental Exposures and Health Outcomes (MILPAAHEL) to study the effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). He believes these substances have much more of a health impact than most people realize.

"Today's adults are the first generation to experience serious health problems from these substances. If we do not take this challenge seriously," he cautions, "there is every reason to be concerned about the coming generations as well."

POPs enter our bodies when we consume fatty foods such as dairy products, meat, and particularly fatty fish. One of Dr Ruzzin's research findings on mice is that eating salmon that contains high levels of POPs can lead to insulin resistance, one of the main causes of metabolic syndrome. Popping up everywhere

In two recent scientific articles, Dr Ruzzin has sounded the alarm about the harmful health effects of POPs.

"A great number of studies are now showing that people with high concentrations of POPs in their body are developing metabolic syndrome. We are talking about ordinary people who live in normal environments," stress Dr Ruzzin, "so this means that we are being exposed to far too high levels of POPs that may have a major impact on our health."

Typically, dietary changes are prescribed to treat metabolic syndrome. But according to Dr Ruzzin, too little is known about the effects of pollutants in specific foods to make any detailed health recommendations. This is why he believes we should waste no time in launching more studies that examine the combination of pollutants and nutrients in humans.

Dangerous cocktail effect

Studies have shown that POPs, even at concentrations below their danger level individually, can interact with other POPs or hazardous substances to cause serious consequences. This combined "cocktail effect" worries Dr Ruzzin.

"Current threshold values for pollutants are probably too high," says Dr Ruzzin, "which means that the regulatory framework needs changing. Food producers need to eliminate hazardous substances to a far greater extent than they do at present, and we consumers need more information about the kinds of chemicals we could be ingesting with their food products."

Deformed genitalia

Danish studies have shown that even small amounts of different chemicals found in everyday products can have a cocktail effect. Malformations of the sex organs are one possible consequence. Researcher Sofie Christiansen of the Technical University of Denmark is concerned.

"There is no doubt that the importance of interactions between different hormone-disrupting chemicals has been underestimated," she asserted in connection with a conference on environmentally hazardous substances co-hosted by the Research Council and the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency this January.

NASA's Seven Minutes of Terror: Curiosity's precarious Mars landing explained (video)

NASA's Seven Minutes of Terror Curiosity's precarious Mars landing explained video

Edited and scored with dramatic tension of a summer blockbuster trailer, NASA's put together a gripping short clip that dresses down Curiosity's mission to Mars for the layman. The "car-sized" rover, set to touchdown on August 5th of this year at 10:31PM PDT, is currently journeying towards the Red Planet on a suicide mission of sorts, with the success of its make it or break it EDL (enter, descent, landing) wracking the nerves of our Space Agency's greatest minds in advance. Their cause for concern? A period of radio silence, dubbed the "seven minutes of terror" for the amount of time it takes a signal to reach Earth, during which the craft will have already either smashed disastrously into the Martian landscape or nestled perfectly down from the ascend phase on a 21ft long tether. The logistics involved are so numerous and prone to error -- slowing the craft from 13,000 mph to 0 mph and then deploying, detaching and avoiding collision with the supersonic parachute for starters -- that it's a wonder the government ever signed off on the project. If it all does come off without a hitch, however, the ladies and gents down at Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory certainly deserve several thousand bottles of the finest bubbly taxpayer's money can buy. Click on past the break to gape at the sequence of engineering feats required to make this landing on terra incognita.

Is Outdoor Recreation An Economic Engine? New Report Says "Yes ...

Wildlife watching is one of the forms of outdoor recreation included in the study. NPS photo by Jim Peaco, Yellowstone National Park.

At this point in the 2012 political season the economy is front and center in both campaigns, but all the rhetoric has included little mention of outdoor recreation as part of the equation. Two new reports suggest that's a major oversight. Can public lands, including national parks, benefit from the publicity?

According to The Outdoor Recreation Economy 2012, "more than 140 million Americans engage in outdoor activities each year, directly delivering $646 billion to the economy and supporting 6.1 million domestic jobs. In addition, the report credits spending on outdoor recreation with generating $39.9 billion in federal tax revenue and $39.7 billion in state/local tax revenue."

Those are impressive numbers, and a spokesperson for the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) says, "This new study reinforces what the outdoor industry has known for a long time ? outdoor recreation is a larger and more critical sector of the American economy than most people realize."

"During a time when some American industries are struggling, we are seeing solid growth," said Will Manzer, CEO of Eastern Mountain Sports and chair of the OIA Board of Directors. "Since 2005, the outdoor recreation economy has grown approximately 5 percent annually. In fact, outdoor recreation supports a significant number of jobs, on par with ? or, in some cases, more than ? other sizeable American industries."

The Groups Behind The Studies

So, who sponsored these reports, and how might the findings apply to national parks? The Outdoor Recreation Economy 2012 was released by the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) on June 20. A separate summary entitled The Outdoor Recreation Economy - A Snapshot of the Economic Impact of Outdoor Recreation in the West was released earlier in the month, and focuses on the report's findings that apply to the western states.

That summary was prepared by the Western Governors Association and a coalition of five outdoor industry groups: the Outdoor Industry Association, Motorcycle Industry Council, Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Some of those organizations would not normally be considered strong boosters of national parks, at least by many traditional park supporters. Nonetheless, competition for dollars needed to fund parks will continue to intensify in coming years, so it's worth taking a look at both studies to see if they offer any help on the political front in justifying expenditures on parks.

The introduction to the "Snapshot" report, signed by Washington Governor Christine O. Gregoire, notes that the effort "marks the first time the non-motorized and motorized recreation industries have joined forces to provide a complete picture of the economic impact and importance of outdoor recreation for the economy."

The Role of Public Lands in Outdoor Recreation

The importance of public lands is recognized in the full report: "Every year, hundreds of millions of visitors ? young and old, after-work enthusiasts to international travelers, and from coast to coast ? flock to America?s parks, forests and waters. From seashores and local parks to the wild backcountry, America?s public lands and waters are the very foundation of the national outdoor recreation system. Outdoor recreation can grow jobs and drive the economy if we manage and invest in parks, waters and trails as a system designed to sustain economic dividends for America."

"Outdoor Recreation" is obviously a very broad term, so how was it defined for purposes of these reports?

Included in "outdoor recreation activities" were: trail sports (trail running, unpaved day hiking, unpaved backpacking and rock climbing); biking; camping; snow sports; water sports (except sailing); fishing; hunting; wildlife watching; motorcycle riding and off-roading.

While some of those pursuits are not major factors in most NPS areas, others such as the trail activities, camping, wildlife watching and boating and water sports are popular visitor activities in parks.

Not All "Outdoor" Activities Were Included

According to the Western Governors summary, study organizers took a rather conservative approach by excluding some specialized activities with significant local economic impacts. Special events, such as the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, USA Pro Cycling Challenge and Daytona Bike Week and Biketoberfest were not included in the study. (If you read the full OIA report, you will find references to some of those activities.)

Also excluded in the figures were spending by foreign tourists and "ripple effects created as manufacturers, retailers, service providers and other directly-benefitted businesses re-spend recreation dollars down the line." The report also omitted "any commercial or commuting activity, team and spectator sports (ball sports, track and field, swimming etc.), fitness and indoor recreational pursuits (weightlifting, yoga, cooking, electronic entertainment and gaming, reading, indoor hobbies etc.), and vacation and travel for purposes other than undertaking activities specifically in the pursuit of outdoor recreation."

Gear Plus Travel Equals Major Spending

Given those exclusions, what was included in the analysis? "The outdoor recreation economy thrives when Americans spend their hard-earned dollars in the pursuit of outdoor recreation. This spending occurs in two forms: the purchase of gear and vehicles, and dollars spent on trips and travel."

"Gear purchases include anything for outdoor recreation, such as outdoor apparel and footwear, bicycles, skis, fishing waders, tents, rifles, or backpacks. Vehicle purchases include vehicles and accessories used only for outdoor recreation, such as boats, motorcycles, RVs, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles."

"The outdoor recreation economy grows long after consumers purchase outdoor gear and vehicles. When people use their outdoor gear and vehicles, they spend money on day and overnight trips, and on travel-related expenses such as airfares, rental cars, lodging, campgrounds, restaurants, groceries, gasoline and souvenirs. They pay for river guides and outfitters, lift tickets and ski lessons, entrance fees, licenses and much more. Their spending supports innumerable small business owners. And they visit recreation areas that are cared for by land managers, park rangers, NGOs and volunteers."

Help for Pinched Government Budgets?

Stagnant or declining tax revenues at both the federal and state level are a significant challenge, and the study touts help from recreation for cash-strapped governments. Detractors will point to a vested interest by the study's sponsors, but even if those revenues are over-estimated by one third, the cited federal tax receipts from recreational activities for the western states alone ($15.4 billion) would still fund the entire 2013 budget requests for four agencies managing the bulk of public lands used for outdoor recreation: the National Park Service, Bureau of Land management, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U. S. Forest Service. Significant portions of those budgets, of course, are spent on activities that have nothing to do with recreation.

The OIA data may offer some useful perspective from one other standpoint. As reported by the Traveler earlier this year, the National Park Service issued a series of press releases this past Spring on the economic impact of that agency on the nation's economy: "All told, the system generated $31 billion and 258,000 jobs in 2010." Compare those numbers to the figures of $646 billion and 6.1 million domestic jobs cited by the OIA for the broader outdoor recreation industry in 2011, and the NPS figures seem rather conservative.

Western Governors Get on Board

Governor Gregoire's comments in the Western Governors Association summary of the study concludes with the following: "Outdoor recreation is critical to the West?s economy for more than just the opportunity to play in the great outdoors. It creates sustainable jobs and incomes for our friends and neighbors, especially in rural areas. It provides the opportunity to unplug from our busy lives, recharge our souls and live healthier lifestyles. The history and ethic of the West are tied to our lands and great outdoor places. Let?s build a world-class industry and recreational opportunities for Westerners and visitors to enjoy."

Can park supporters use studies such as this one to advantage in the political arena? That remains to be seen, but recognition by the Western Governors Association of the recreational value of public lands as opposed to strictly consumptive uses is a bit of welcome news.

BEIJING (AP) ? A Chinese spacecraft carrying three astronauts carried out a manual docking with an orbiting module on Sunday, a first for the country as it strives to match American and Russian exploits in space.

The Shenzhou 9 capsule completed the maneuver with the Tiangong 1 module shortly before 1 p.m. (0500 GMT). The docking was shown live on national television. It follows a docking last week that was carried out by remote control from a ground base in China.

The Chinese astronauts have been living and working in the module for the past week as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station. They returned to the Shenzhou 9 capsule early Sunday and disconnected in preparation for the manual re-connection.

The crew includes 33-year-old Liu Yang, an air force pilot and China's first female space traveler.

Liu is joined by mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and crew mate Liu Wang, 43.

Their mission, which is expected to last at least 10 days, is China's fourth manned mission. Shenzhou 9 launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China.

China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to send independently maintained space stations into orbit. It is already one of just three nations to have launched manned spacecraft on their own.

Another manned mission to the module is planned later this year. Possible future missions could include sending a man to the moon.

The Tiangong 1, which was launched last year, is due to be replaced by a permanent space station around 2020. That station is to weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station.

South Africa police accused in murders

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Eighteen South African police officers have been arrested on charges of murder, assault and possession of ammunition, an official said.

A spokesman for prosecutors, Mthunzi Mhaga, said that during a court appearance on Friday in the eastern port city of Durban, the officers were freed on 5,000 rand (less than $600) bail each.

The arrests earlier this week followed an investigation that began in January 2012 after allegations of a police "death squad" operating in the Durban area appeared in the Sunday Times, a Johannesburg newspaper.

In 2011, the newspaper alleged that the unit had committed "scores of assassinations, some in retaliation for suspected cop killing and others related to ongoing taxi wars."

Using witness testimony, death scene photographs and expert ballistic reports, the newspaper linked the unit the police officers worked for to many suspicious deaths.

Police spokesman McIntosh Polela said police officers of various ranks were arrested, and that authorities seized counterfeit cash, ammunition and crime scene photos during the arrests.

The accused officers are to report weekly to their nearest police station. They are due back in court Aug. 23.

Polela says that more arrests are likely.

South Africa has a high rate of violent crime and some citizens, in calls to radio talk shows and letters to newspaper editors, have praised members of the alleged death squad for cracking down on criminals.

Nokia Camera Extras hits Lumia 900 in US and China, offers four new ways to capture candids

Nokia Camera Extras arrives for Lumia owners in US and China, gives you four new ways to capture candids

Although Nokia's Camera Extras app was scheduled to hit Lumia 900 smartphones sometime next week, owners in the US and China will be pleased to know they they can get it now. Nokia has officially pushed the free app into the Windows Phone Marketplace for both regions, giving Mango-flavored Lumia users four new options for capturing photos. Along with a much-needed self-timer, you'll find three other modes: Panorama, Action Shot (for photographing fast-moving subjects) and Smart Group Shot (selects the best faces from a sequence of frames). Don't fret if you don't have a 900 or live outside of the aforementioned either -- Nokia plans to release the Scalado-bred software for all Lumia smartphones worldwide in July. Hit up the links below for more info, and be sure to let us know how it works for you in the comments.

This Playstation Move Sniper Rifle Is Your You're-Still-Not-Really-A-Sniper Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Ah, snipers. They get the fancy gear, the camouflage and the headlines. I do not have the patience to be a military sniper. These guys are sitting in the bushes or in a building for hours sometimes without moving a muscle. They have to have an extreme attention to detail, and I'd imagine they spend more time studying wind current than they do firing bullets. Sniping in an FPS is absolutely nothing like sniping in real life, and I hate when people think otherwise. I mean, you do have to find an isolated spot on the map, you can't give away your position or risk losing it and you constantly have to watch your back. Still, it's absolutely ridiculous to assume sniping in a game is anything like the real thing. But this Playstation Move Sniping Rifle should certainly help convince you that it is! More »
