New pathogen epidemic identified in sub-Saharan Africa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers have found that the spread of a dangerous bacteria that can be fatal in up to 45% of people infected in sub-Sahara Africa may have been instigated by the emergence and spread of HIV in Africa. The study also found that one of the major contributing factors for the successful spread of the disease -- non-Typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) -- was the acquisition of genes that afford resistance to several front line drugs used to treat blood-borne infection such as iNTS.

A new study out September 30 reveals that the emergence and spread of a rapidly evolving invasive intestinal disease, that has a significant mortality rate (up to 45%) in infected people in sub-Saharan Africa, seems to have been potentiated by the HIV epidemic in Africa.

The team found that invasive non-Typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is caused by a new form of the bacteria Salmonella Typhimurium that has spread from two different focal hubs in Southern and Central Africa beginning 52 and 35 years ago, respectively. They also found that one of the major contributing factors for the successful spread of iNTS was the acquisition of genes that afford resistance to several front line drugs used to treat blood-borne infection such as iNTS.

iNTS is a blood-borne infection that kills approximately one of four people in sub-Saharan Africa who catch it. Yet, in the rest of the world, NTS is a leading cause of acute inflammatory diarrhea that is self-limiting and tends to be fatal in less than 1 per cent of people infected. The disease is more severe in sub-Saharan Africa than the rest of the world because of factors such as malnutrition, co-infection with malaria or HIV and potentially the novel genotype of the Salmonella bacteria.

"The immune system susceptibility provided by HIV, malaria and malnutrition at a young age, may provide a population in sub-Saharan Africa that is large enough for this detrimental pathogen to enter, adapt, circulate and thrive," says Chinyere Okoro, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We used whole genome sequencing to define a novel lineage of Salmonella Typhimurium that is causing a previously unrecognised epidemic across the region. Its genetic makeup is evolving into a more typhoid like bacteria, able to efficiently spread around the human body"

From sequenced samples, the team created a phylogenetic or 'family tree', depicting the pathogen's evolution, dating when each sample first emerged and overlaying this with geographical information about where these samples came from. They found that this invasive disease comprises of two very closely related waves; the first wave originated from a possible south-eastern hub, about 52 years ago and the second originated about 35 years ago, possibly from the Congo Basin.

"The HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa is thought to have begun in a central region and underwent expansion eastwards, a strikingly similar dynamic to that observed for second iNTS wave," says Dr Robert Kingsley, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Our findings suggest the current epidemic of iNTS and its transmission across sub-Saharan Africa may have been potentiated by an increase in the critical population of susceptible, immune-compromised people."

The team identified that the vast majority of samples from the second wave of iNTS contains a gene that makes them resistant to chloramphenicol, a frontline antibiotic in the treatment of Salmonella. This gene was not present in the samples from the first wave of iNTS. This observation suggests that iNTS acquired this gene early on in the evolution of the second wave, probably around the time of its spread from the Congo basin.

"Because it acquired resistance to chloramphenicol, this pathogen has much greater opportunity to survive and spread across the region," says Professor Gordon Dougan, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "This is the first time that the power of whole-genome sequencing has been used to track the spread of iNTS. Our research highlights the power this approach has to monitor the emergence and spread of dangerous pathogens both locally and globally over time."

"There has been some evidence that this disease can be passed from human to human. Now the race is on to discover how NTS is actually transmitted in sub-Saharan Africa so that effective intervention strategies can be implemented."

Spain's debt to rise to 90.5% of GDP in 2013

(AP) ? Spain's public debt will reach 90.5 percent of its gross domestic product in 2013 with its new austerity budget, according to government documents.

Spain also revised its debt ratio forecast for this year to 85.5 percent of GDP, up from 79.8 percent.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said Saturday that Spain's increased interest costs on its public financing are the main cause of the rise: "it is important to reduce this increase and its speed."

Montoro spoke after presenting the 2013 draft budget the government says will cut overall spending by euro40 billion ($51 billion). The budget reduces funds available for unemployment payments by 6.3 percent, and support for Spain's royal house by 4 percent.

Spain is mired in its second recession in recent years with one-in-four workers without a job.

Potentially dangerous new malaria mosquito identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? University of Notre Dame entomologists are part of a team of researchers that recently discovered a potentially dangerous new malaria-transmitting mosquito. The as yet unnamed, and previously unreported, mosquito breeds in the western areas of Kenya and has an unknown DNA match to any of the existing malaria-transmitting species.

The Anopheles species of mosquitoes which transmits malaria in Africa is already widely studied by researchers. It prefers to rest indoors during the day and feed on humans during the night. Current malaria control programs, including spraying of insecticides and using insecticide-treated bed nets, are designed with these behaviors in mind.

Although the new species has never been implicated in the transmission of malaria, new discoveries in its biting habits pose a threat because it was found to be active outdoors and prefers to bite people earlier in the evening, soon after sunset, when people are not protected by current malaria control techniques.

Neil Lobo, a Notre Dame research associate professor and Brandy St. Laurent, a former Notre Dame doctoral student, joined forces on the team of researchers that made the discovery. y Frank Collins, Notre Dame's George and Winifred Clark Professor of Biology, Collins was principal investigator of the Malaria Transmission Consortium effort funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The discovery was announced in a paper whose lead author was Jennifer Stevenson of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Gillmor Gang: Platformicide

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? John Borthwick, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor ? watched in amazement as Twitter made good on its promise to hobble the core of its viral power adopter developers and users. By shutting down third-party clients to focus monetization on its core clients and the Web, Twitter leaves itself exposed to its challengers for control of the realtime wave. To some of the Gang, Apple's move to eject Google Maps in favor of its own immature product seems similarly motivated and fated to bad results. But Twitter has historically made these kinds of protective overreaching moves in order to protect the fledgling company from being overrun by more powerful competitors. This time it's different, as Twitter releases services designed to capitalize on the innovations of its ecosystem. The real calculation is whether the openings provided to Google+ and, to a lesser extent, Facebook can be leveraged before innovation dries up in the Twitter pipeline. A high-stakes game of Chicken.

O's blast Jays to keep pace in playoff chase

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:31 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - After losing two straight games to Toronto, the Baltimore Orioles broke out the big bats.

The Orioles tied a team record by with seven home runs to rout the Blue Jays 12-2 and stay within 1 1/2 games of the AL East lead.

Chris Davis and Manny Machado each connected twice and the Orioles remained close to the division-leading New York Yankees, who won 8-2 in Minnesota.

Nate McLouth hit a leadoff shot in the first inning and Jim Thome and Mark Reynolds also homered. Baltimore has hit seven home runs three times, most recently on Aug. 26, 1985.

"Home runs are very unique, and when you do what we did tonight, it's something to be proud of. It's something that doesn't happen a whole lot in the game," Thome said.

Thome's home run was the 612th of his career and the first he's hit at home for the Orioles.

"Up and down the lineup, everyone swung the bat well. It's been fun," Thome said.

Davis finished with a career-high five RBIs to help the Orioles split a four-game series with the last-place Blue Jays.

"This was a tough series. It was one of those ones that you don't want to see at the end of the season coming in off a long road trip," Davis said.

"I think if you'd have told us a few months ago that we'd be a game-and-a-half out with six games left, I think you'd be pretty happy with that."

Beginning Friday, the Orioles have three games with Boston at home and three at Tampa Bay.

"We just got through playing Boston and we played them well. Obviously, the three in Tampa are going to be tough, but we're at a point where we still have a chance, so that's all you can ask for," Davis said.

The Orioles trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before hitting three home runs.

Thome led off with his third homer since joining the Orioles. With two outs, Machado hit his fifth of the year for a 3-2 Baltimore lead. All of Machado's home runs have come at home, and his drive was the Orioles' 200th homer of the year.

Davis' three-run drive gave the Orioles a five-run inning and finished Carlos Villanueva (7-7).

Villanueva equaled a career high by giving up four home runs.

"Those mistakes I made, they hit them with authority. They put the power stroke on them and made me pay for them," Villanueva said.

Machado and Thome are the first AL teammates to hit home runs in the same inning with an age difference of more than 20 years, according to home run historian David Vincent.

Thome is 42 and Machado is 20 - Thome's major league career began 10 months before Machado was born.

"That's crazy," Machado said. "It's a pretty good stat. I remember when I used to watch (Thome) play when I was a little kid. Now to hit a home run in the same inning he did, just feels great."

Davis hit his second home run in the seventh. On Aug. 24, he hit three home runs against the Blue Jays, also in a game started by Villanueva. He has 28 home runs.

Reynolds hit his 23rd homer in the sixth and Machado added a two-run shot in the eighth.

Miguel Gonzalez (8-4) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. He allowed Edwin Encarnacion's 42nd home run with two outs in the top of the first.

With one out in the fifth, J.P. Arencibia, who went 7 for 9 in the four-game series, doubled and scored on Anthony Gose's single.

NOTES: Orioles LHP Randy Wolf was put on the 60-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his left elbow. Baltimore purchased the contract of INF-OF Bill Hall from Triple-A Norfolk. Hall will provide outfield help while Lew Ford is out with a groin injury. ... Deion Sanders, in town for Thursday's NFL Network game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, took batting practice with the Orioles before the game. Sanders, who played nine years in the majors, was an outfielder for Baltimore manager Buck Showalter in the minors while in the Yankees' organization. ... The Orioles are off Thursday and begin a three-game series with Boston on Friday. Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman (8-2, 3.08 ERA) faces Red Sox RHP Aaron Cook (4-10, 5.13). ... On Thursday, Toronto hosts New York to begin a four-game series. Blue Jays RHP Brandon Morrow (8-7, 3.28) faces Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (12-7, 4.94).

Press Release 26 September 2012

Ownership in 401(k) Plans Continues to Grow, While IRA Ownership Falls
http://www.ebri.org/pdf/PR989.26Sept12.IAs.pdf

?

WASHINGTON?Although fewer American families are participating in a retirement plan at work, more

of those with a plan are in a 401(k). At the same time, ownership of individual retirement accounts (IRAs)

is falling, according to a new report by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).

Analyzing the four-year period from 2007?2010, EBRI finds that the share of American families with a

member in any employment-based retirement plan from a current employer increased steadily from

38.8 percent in 1992 to 40.6 percent in 2007, before declining in 2010 to 37.9 percent.

?

Ownership of 401(k)-type plans among families participating in a retirement plan more than doubled from

31.6 percent in 1992 to 79.5 percent in 2007, and increased again in 2010 to 82.1 percent. But the

percentage of families owning an IRA or Keogh retirement plan (for the self-employed) declined from

30.6 percent in 2007 to 28.0 percent in 2010. In addition, the percentage of families with a retirement plan

from a current employer, a previous employer's defined contribution plan, or an IRA/Keogh declined

from 66.2 percent in 2007 to 63.8 percent in 2010.

?

As in the past, EBRI found that retirement plan assets account for a growing majority of most Americans'

financial wealth, outside the value of their home. The median (mid-point) percentage of families' total

financial assets comprised by defined contribution plan assets and/or IRA/Keogh assets (assuming the

family had any) increased from 2007 to 2010, and accounted for a clear majority of these assets:

? Defined contribution plan balances accounted for 58.1 percent of families' total financial assets in

2007, and that share grew to 61.4 percent in 2010.

?

? Defined contribution and/or IRA/Keogh balances increased their share as well, from 64.1 percent

of total family financial assets in 2007 to 65.7 percent in 2010. Across all demographic groups,

these assets account for a very large share of total financial assets for those who own these

accounts.

?

However, the EBRI report notes that the most recent data, along with other EBRI research, indicate that

many people are unlikely to afford a comfortable retirement. "Americans lost a tremendous amount of

wealth between 2007 and 2010, and the percentage of families that participated in an employment-based

retirement plan and/or owned an IRA decreased as well," said Craig Copeland, EBRI senior research

associated and author of the report.

?

However, he added, the percentage of family heads who were eligible to participate in a defined

contribution plan and actually did so remained virtually unchanged during this time. Therefore, despite all

the bad news that resulted from this period, one positive factor should be noted: "Those eligible to

participate in a retirement plan continued to participate?which may help change the likelihood of a lower

retirement standard for many Americans," Copeland said.

?

The report is based on the most recent data from the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), the Federal

Reserve Board's triennial survey of wealth. The full report is published in the September EBRI Issue

Brief, "Individual Account Retirement Plans: An Analysis of the 2010 Survey of Consumer Finances,"

available online at www.ebri.org

?

Concerning IRAs, the EBRI report once again quantifies the degree to which IRA assets are rolled over

from employment-based retirement plans (such as defined benefit pensions or defined contribution

401(k)-type plans), and do not come from new contributions. While regular IRAs account for the largest

percentage of IRA ownership, rollover IRAs had a larger share of assets than regular IRAs in 2010.

Specifically, among total IRA assets, rollover IRAs account for 44.5 percent of assets, regular IRAs 44.1

percent, and Roth IRAs 11.4 percent. Therefore, rollover IRAs account for a larger share of assets than

regular IRAs, while the two together account for just under 90 percent of the IRA assets.

?

The report notes that tracking individual-account retirement plans such as 401(k)s and IRAs is important

because traditional defined benefit pension plans have long been declining in the private sector, while

defined contribution retirement plans have increased?a trend that makes it ever-more important for most

private-sector workers to build their retirement wealth through individual-account savings plans.

Consequently, the amount of assets accumulated in these accounts provides an indication of how

prepared?or unprepared?most workers' finances will be to supplement the Social Security benefits they

will receive in retirement.

?

The Employee Benefit Research Institute is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit research institute based in

Washington, DC, that focuses on health, savings, retirement, and economic security issues. EBRI does

not lobby and does not take policy positions. The work of EBRI is made possible by funding from its

members and sponsors, which includes a broad range of public, private, for-profit and nonprofit

organizations. For more information go to www.ebri.org or www.asec.org

ETFs hoped to bring new lease on life to stock market ...

Vietnam has turned the green light on exchange traded funds (ETF), going to promulgate a circular guiding the establishment of the funds.

ETF have been developing rapidly in foreign stock markets over the last 10 years. However, in Vietnam, this kind of fund is just coming out, 10 years after its first operation day.

Vietnamese watchdog agencies needed a long period to design the legal framework for such funds and set up the framework when the time is ripe. It is really a necessary cautiousness. In developed economies, the management agencies also took very cautious steps before allowing ETF to appear on the market.

Experts believe that ETF would be a very attractive product to investors, and that ETF have bigger advantages than other types of fund for four reasons.

First, the management cost is low.

Second, the transaction mechanism is flexible and convenient, which also means the high liquidity. Investors can make transactions at any time during the day like other normal shares. Meanwhile, the certificates of open funds can only be traded on some certain days.

Third, this type of fund allows using the mobilized capital more effectively. Unlike closed-end and opened-end funds, which always have to keep certain amounts of cash, ETF can put all the mobilized capital into investment.

Fourth, ETF have the higher transparency than the other two types of funds, since the funds? investment portfolios are made public, thus allowing investors to react quickly to the market changes.

Yuta Seki from the Nomura Capital Market Research Institute said on Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam that though he still has not made any detailed calculation about the impacts of ETF on the Vietnamese market, he still believes that ETF would bring added value and help develop the stock market in the future.

Especially, ETF is believed to be very useful in the dealing with the banks? bad debts and settling the cross-ownership problem in the banking system ? the big headaches to Vietnam for now.

However, he also said that ETF should not be considered as a ?magic rod,? and that it is necessary to keep very cautious in managing the market.

Nguyen Thanh Long, Director of the Fund Management Department under the State Securities Commission (SSC), in an interview given to Dau tu chung khoan, said the existence of ETF would increase the attractiveness of the stock market.

Long said investors, especially foreign investors have high demand for making investment in Vietnamese stocks via ETF. As such, when Vietnam allows ETF to operate, it would create more opportunities to attract foreign capital flow to Vietnam.

Under the current regulations, the total shares of a Vietnamese company foreign investors hold must not be higher than 49 percent of the total stakes.

However, with ETF, when foreign investors buy fund certificates, they do not have to bear the regulation on the ceiling foreign ownership ratio. As such, this indirectly gives more ?room? to foreign investors in Vietnamese companies.

However, Long stressed that Vietnam will still be able to control the foreign ownership ratios in listed companies.

When asked about the establishment of domestic ETF, Long said domestic ETF would well compete with foreign funds, because domestic funds can enjoy a more open mechanism.

However, Long still cannot say for sure if the first domestic ETF can be established right in 2013, saying that this would depend on the market conditions.

Dung has revealed that SSC is now considering allowing to set up REIT (Real estate investment Trust) as well.

We are not foster parents - Adoption.com Forums

DH and I have having been caring for Happy Baby for about 3 weeks and of course have fallen head over heels for the boy!

Tomorrow is his mama's court hearing in which she is facing a year in federal prison. DH & I visited her in jail a few weeks ago; we told her that we are not foster parents and we cannot keep Happy Baby for a year and then gave him back. If his mama wants to work her case plan in order to parent HB that is great but she needs to work with CPS in order to achieve this goal. This means Happy Baby will need to go to licensed foster parents.

We cannot risk the damage it could do to our family if Happy Baby were taken away after a year or more with us especially since he is only 4 months old. That wouldn't be fair to HB either.

HB's mom needs to make the choice either tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

We are at the stage in which we either need to get our lives back to the way it was before HB or get our lives settled with a new baby.

The thought of handing Happy Baby over to anyone is too much to bare. I am sick to my stomach. This is going to break a lot of hearts within the family. My mi-ma is 82 years old and this is her 8th great-grandchild. She has been at my house almost every other day to help me out and cuddle with him.

I just pray that the foster family will be warm and loving like many on these forums!

But honestly, I want his mama to sign over her rights so we can make him a permanent part of the family.

European Wind Energy Association urges 2030 renewable energy target

CTBR Staff Writer Published 17 September 2012

The European Wind Energy Association has urged the energy ministers of the European Union to consider setting a renewable energy target for the region, to be achieved by 2030.

The association expressed its concerns over ongoing discussions on the 'Renewable Energy Strategy' for the post-2020 period which does not have a specific target to be achieved.

EWEA Head of Regulatory Affairs Stephane Bourgeois remarked in Brussels that the ministers and countries risked their credibility, if they went ahead with the discussions without including a target.

"It makes no sense to ignore the one policy that has worked most successfully up to now. Ministers should recognize the benefits of such a target," said Bourgeois.

The European Commission's 'Renewable Energy Strategy' has so far refused to put a target with a view that it will lead to more economic activity, fewer fossil fuel imports, more innovation for all technologies and more competitiveness for Europe than other policy options.

Construction industry: Components and Transportation

Construction industry

Construction industry: Buildings and Infrastructure

Construction industry: Financing and Regulation

The modern construction industry uses a wide variety of components for plumbing, electricity, heating, air-conditioning, security, and telecommunications for private residences and for large commercial and public buildings. The manufacture of these components creates a multiplier effect that ripples throughout the economy. Each of the components that is manufactured for end-user buildings?whether public or private?must be built to suit the building that requires construction. Because natural materials such as wood and stone are increasingly replaced by glass, plastics, manufactured wood, and other artificial materials, the factories that manufacture these products must also be constructed, further amplifying a multiplier effect.

Modern building also requires a wide range of power tools, ranging from power screwdrivers used for the smallest projects to gigantic cranes used in the largest projects. Electrical, compressed air-, diesel-, and gasoline-powered equipment must be manufactured to support the wide variety of construction projects in the United States. The factories in which these products are manufactured also need to be constructed, so that construction has become a major part of the American economy.

Workers must transport all of the products, components, and equipment necessary for a project from the factories in which they are created to the warehouses in which they are stored to the work sites where they are used. Still other workers must move the raw materials to manufacture these products fromthe forests, quarries, and mines to the factories where the components and equipment are manufactured. The transportation industry in the United States is massive. Whenever possible, bulky goods are moved by rail, driving the expansion of?railroads?to accommodate such shipment. Still other goods are moved by long-distance commercial trucks, while delivery to the final destination is by short distance trucking companies. Again, factories must be built to produce the equipment for railroads or trucking companies.

The complex, sophisticated building process leads to the construction of facilities for wholesale and retail merchants, further stimulating the construction industry. The wholesale and retail merchants themselves add significantly to the economic activity of the nation.

Will it end? Chicago teachers to vote on strike

(AP) ? After a weeklong strike over job security and evaluation procedures, it all comes down to this: Are Chicago teachers satisfied enough with a proposed contract deal that they will vote to end their walkout?

Parents and striking teachers are waiting to learn whether students in the nation's third-largest school district will return to the classroom on Monday after a week of tense negotiations between the teachers union, the district, and representatives of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Both sides were hopeful that the union's House of Delegates would vote to suspend the strike so classes could resume Monday. The body's nearly 800 members were set to consider a tentative deal at a meeting Sunday afternoon.

"We believe this is a good contract; however, no contract will solve all of the inequities in our district," union president Karen Lewis said in a statement. But she cautioned that the group would review the details carefully and that no decision had been made. If delegates suspend the strike, all teachers would vote on the contract at a later date.

Late Saturday, the union said it would present to its members a three-year contract that included a raise in each year and creates a hiring pool with the goal of giving half of open jobs to laid-off teachers. The contract also includes a new evaluation procedure based in part on student test scores, but teachers can appeal their ratings, the union said. The district and union have the option of extending the contract into a fourth year.

"I'm pretty confident that something will come together that both sides will agree on, whether that's tomorrow" or another day, said Ramses James, a sixth-grade math teacher who joined thousands of teachers and their allies for the rally in a city park.

The walkout that began last Monday was the first Chicago teacher strike in 25 years and forced more than 350,000 students out of class just after the start of the year. The last major teacher's strike in a U.S. city was in Detroit six years ago.

The strike erupted after months of bitter contract negotiations amid disagreement over a new teacher evaluation process the union felt was too heavily based on student test scores. Teachers also hoped to preserve pay increases based on longevity and education and they raised issues of whether laid-off teachers should have a first shot at job openings in other schools. They also expressed concern about classroom overcrowding, a lack of resources and schools without air-conditioning.

Second-grade teacher Julie McDevitt said the strike and weekend rally "put into perspective the daily life of a teacher and our basic needs to make a classroom work."

"We're not office workers. We're not lucky enough to walk into a classroom and (have) everything be equipped for us," she said. "We don't open our desk drawers and see pencils ... or post-its. We have to supply everything for those classrooms."

Saturday's rally was a boisterous show of strength and solidarity. Union members from Wisconsin, Minnesota and elsewhere joined in the chants and cheers as speaker after speaker urged Chicago's teachers to stand firm until they have a deal in writing. Speakers also assured Chicago teachers that their strike symbolized the hopes of other unions that have been losing ground nationwide.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson addressed the crowd, saying the strike was a "struggle for working people everywhere." He said there was still a long road to ensuring all residents of the city have equal access to quality schools, particularly in neighborhoods beset by gang violence and poverty.

"People are energized by this," said Marty Horning, a high school social studies teacher from Milwaukee who came to the rally with a busload of others. "I think that the line has to be drawn in terms of teacher bashing, union bashing and privatization of education. These forces and factors are not just in Chicago, not just in Wisconsin, but across the nation."

For Wisconsin teachers, the rally also served as a moment to celebrate a judge's Friday ruling striking down nearly all of a contentious state law championed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker that had effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most public workers.

Walker's administration immediately vowed to appeal, while unions, which have vigorously fought the law, declared victory.

Saturday's talks between the Chicago teachers union and the district took place at the offices of union attorney Robert Bloch. On his way into the talks, Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey was optimistic that resuming classes Monday was still possible.

"We're hopeful that we can do it but frankly like I said, the devil is in the details of this contract and we want it in writing," he told reporters.

When You Think Your Spinal Surgeon Is Wrong

There are all kinds of injuries and diseases of the spine that can warrant having a surgical procedure done. There are also many non-surgical options for those who are not experiencing dramatic issues. There are times when an injury or disease lies right in between, and often two different doctors will have differing opinions regarding the best course of action.

Surgical procedures for the spine can include implants, which are often used to produce a natural effect of the area in question. There is a potential for a life long benefit when you replace defective or deteriorating discs with implants. There is also a risk that the spine and surrounding tissue will never really be the same or fully recover.

Because the back is such an intricate place to tend to, many patients are highly fearful of having any kind of surgical procedure done on the spine. Even those in pain severe enough to reduce the quality of life to a rather minimal level are often unable to really feel comfortable with the idea. It may be necessary for patients to become entirely disabled before relenting to implants because of this fear.

If you are not sure whether or not such an option is really right for you the emotional turmoil can become overwhelming. You do not wish to live in pain. You also do not wish to have surgery unless there is no other way to get relief.

Advances in technology and science have merged to create optimal conditions for patients who may qualify for other types of relief. The regenerative medicine field is exploding with opportunities for physicians as well as patients to experience a more comfortable transition into disc replacement and other aspects of spinal pain relief.

The reproduction of actual human tissue taken directly from the intended patient can be the best option. Of course, this would mean that you have to be willing to see a surgeon that offers regenerative medicine and discuss the potential benefits. This might mean traveling, and in some cases you may risk losing your primary doctor on the case.

Adult stem cells and neck surgery or spinal surgery can come together to create a good option for those who are eligible. The idea is to use minimal surgical techniques and use the cells that come from the patient to have the body work through its own healing process. If you believe or even think your surgeon is acting too quickly you should see a physician that offers such advanced techniques.

A number of research advances have been made in the study of adult stem cells and neck surgery. You can learn more when you click on the links at http://www.alliancespinetexas.com now.

Are You Underusing The Cloud? Why Small Businesses Need To ...

Arthur Piccio writes for The Art of Small Business, UPrinting.com?s Small Business Resource. UPrinting business cards are the top choice for small businesses across the United States.

A recent study suggested that around 51% of Americans believe storms affect cloud computing. While that might technically true if a storm disrupts lines and data centers- it seems to indicate a general trend where most don?t really get what cloud computing is.

To emphasize this point ? in the same survey, around 9 out of 10 Americans who claim not to use cloud computing technology have actually used it through online purchases.

The real kicker is, the reason most businesses cite for not adopting cloud computing tech is the cost ? puzzling considering this technology has brought about a quantum leaps in cost efficiency and convenience.

What is clear though is that a lot of smaller businesses are inadvertently passing up the chance to save money and improve efficiency ? and it?s most likely due to a misunderstanding of what cloud computing can do.

As an online printer, we get a significant portion of our business from the ?cloud.? We?d be nowhere without it! ?While we don?t expect every business to be as heavily invested in cloud computing as we are ? it?s safe to say it offers significant advantages for everyone with a secure internet connection.

But a lot of the time, it just plain makes more sense to keep data and use in a location other than the computer you?re immediately using. That?s the reason why most of us use email hosted by a 3rd party, for instance.

But you?d be surprised that a lot of small business owners and entrepreneurs don?t know you can do the same with almost everything.

Cloud computing, as much as I dislike the vagueness of the term, has dramatically lowered barriers that have prevented small businesses from operating as efficiently as much bigger ones.

Using spreadsheet software as an example, smaller operations no longer need to be hobbled by the cost of obtaining licenses to legally use spreadsheet programs that offer the functionality that more expensive tools have.

The fact that these tools are offered in the cloud for free also makes it possible to save on resources that would be otherwise spent standardizing processes in businesses with multiple physical locations. The cost of secure data storage and access is also now so miniscule for the average user, that you can get away with almost no data infrastructure at all, allowing you to put more money into your ideas and making them work.

And this is really just the tip of the iceberg. We deal with printing issues and some of the most common cloud storage tools used by our customers include Apple?s iCloud, Box, Mozy, Windows Sky Drive, SugarSync, GoogleDrive, YouSendIt, Dropbox, and CX. And this is just for storage. Other industries and applications may use these or other tools as well.
