Is Business Networking Your Best Marketing Tool? | Business 2 ...

Networking is a great way to connect with local business owners as well as gain more exposure for your business and get new clients. However, taking a targeted approach to networking is best to ensure you get the results you want. Tim Wyse, founder of Designs Phoenix Signs & Graphics, uses networking on a weekly basis to continually grow both his business and his profit. We had the chance to speak with Tim about his business and how his networking strategy is helping Designs Phoenix Signs & Graphics remain successful year-round.

Business networking tips from Tim Wyse

Business: Designs Phoenix Signs & Graphics Business focus: Top-quality custom signage and graphics Business type: Single-location Location: Phoenix, AZ Number of employees: One full-time and one part-time currently Website: http://designsphoenixsigns.com/ Marketing tactic:Networking really does work

Scott?s Local Business Corner: Can you start by telling us a little about your business?

Tim Wyse: Designs Phoenix is your one-stop marketing graphics source. We excel at vehicle wrap design and installation, three-dimensional lobby signs, window and wall graphics and murals, trade show banners and graphics, electrical and non-electrical architectural signs, custom wallpaper, and more. We use creativity and innovation along with exceptional quality and remarkable service to exceed our clients? expectations.

SLBC: Why did you choose to start a signs and graphics business?

Tim: I have always enjoyed and have some talent in art. I paint murals and draw for a hobby. I also have many years in corporate America in engineering, instruction, and management. Owning my own signs and graphics company allows me to be creative, to consult with clients, and to be involved in a technology business that is always changing. Every project is a new challenge.

SLBC: We?ve heard networking is your best marketing tactic. Why does networking work so well for you?

Tim: One key to signs and graphics is that every business needs something that I can provide. Getting out among business owners allows me to meet and begin a dialogue on what I can do to meet their marketing graphics needs. Additionally, I can promote their businesses to others so networking is a win-win activity.

SLBC: What type of networking events do you attend?

Tim: I attend weekly BNI meetings. I am a member of the North Phoenix Business Leaders group and I visit several others each month. I am a member of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and attend several of their events a month. Additionally, I attend quarterly events sponsored by Loud Rumor and Networking Phoenix at the Talking Stick Resort.

SLBC: How did you find out about the business-networking events you attend?

Tim: I?m always on the lookout for newsletters and emails that alert me to any upcoming marketing and networking events, but word-of-mouth is also a great way to find out about networking opportunities.

SLBC: How much time do you spend networking each week?

Tim: While networking is essential for me, client referrals, online marketing, and cold calling are also important. I spend 3-5 hours a week networking.

SLBC: What makes a business-networking event successful for you?

Tim: Meeting and exchanging cards with five good prospects for mutual business has been key for me. Out of those, three to four short follow-up meetings lead to graphics projects.

SLBC: How would you classify an unsuccessful business-networking event? What do you do now to ensure the networking events you attend are successful?

Tim: Not meeting potential business clients is how I would classify an unsuccessful business-networking event. Since this has happened in the past, I now take a more targeted approach to networking. I do that by looking for owners in businesses who have more potential for mutual business referrals and I make it my goal to meet them during the event.

SLBC: Do you have any tips for other local business owners so they too can be successful at business-networking events?

Tim: Events often have lists of attendees or at least industries represented. Take some time and formulate good introduction messages for the industries that make sense for your offering. Also, do not talk about yourself too much; instead ask questions and listen to the people you meet ? showing interest in the other owner often leads to opportunities.
