European Wind Energy Association urges 2030 renewable energy target

CTBR Staff Writer Published 17 September 2012

The European Wind Energy Association has urged the energy ministers of the European Union to consider setting a renewable energy target for the region, to be achieved by 2030.

The association expressed its concerns over ongoing discussions on the 'Renewable Energy Strategy' for the post-2020 period which does not have a specific target to be achieved.

EWEA Head of Regulatory Affairs Stephane Bourgeois remarked in Brussels that the ministers and countries risked their credibility, if they went ahead with the discussions without including a target.

"It makes no sense to ignore the one policy that has worked most successfully up to now. Ministers should recognize the benefits of such a target," said Bourgeois.

The European Commission's 'Renewable Energy Strategy' has so far refused to put a target with a view that it will lead to more economic activity, fewer fossil fuel imports, more innovation for all technologies and more competitiveness for Europe than other policy options.
