Eric West and his crafty ?Sideshow? circus act arrive at new artist?s loft

At three First Friday events in Chinatown, organizers are putting on a show.

? Eric West, aka Professor Pandemonium, opens up his new artist?s loft from 6 to 10 p.m. today with a preview of his circus sideshow act, ?Pandemonium Sideshow,? along with invited guest performers, in Unit 205 of the Mendonca Building, 1109 Maunakea St.

West produces and stars in ?Sideshow,? which makes the most of his talents as a performer, creator, inventor and instigator. Crafty! His grass-roots, nonprofit Pandemonium Community Arts Organization promotes ?social interactions, nontraditional art forms, having fun ? and Islands of Sustainability.? Last month he organized cardboard box sliding at Kakaako Waterfront Park.

? At Unit 215 of the Mendonca Building, the ARTSmith collective has an open house from 6 to 9:30 p.m. today, with performances and free demos by Jason Tom?s Human Beatbox Academy, Dancers Unlimited and Cherry Blossom Cabaret?s Academy of Tease. Live art and visuals will be provided by the Curators of Hip-Hop, JKS and Michelle Jericho Poppler, music by DJ Mainframe and an open mic.

? The always lively Ong King Arts Center, 184 N. King St., has ?Tourist Trip? (gawdy aloha wear encouraged), an eclectic lineup with music by Peace of Mind, Sean?s Bandanna and DJ The Waves, spoken word by Jocelyn Ng, Keala of Youth Speaks Hawaii and others, and creative movement by the Hawaii Fire Artists (free before 8 p.m., $5 cover before 9, $10 afterward, $2 off with touristy attire).

Samadhi headlines at Live from Lawn

Samadhi Hawaii is in the spotlight at the Hawaii State Art Museum?s Live from the Lawn program tonight. The aerial dance troupe will premiere a new choreographed routine, ?Aerial Romance.?

Co-founder Andrea Torres said a youth group training with Samadhi, ages 8 to 15, will perform a separate program with ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner after the troupe?s show.

?This is the third year we?re performing at the museum,? said Torres. ?It?s my favorite venue because it?s outdoors and we use live music. ? In the past we?ve only used silks, but this time around, we?ll also be using netting, double hoops and trapezes.?

Musicians providing live accompaniment will be Kuana Torres Kahele of Na Palapalai (who will be promoting his new solo release ?Kaunaloa?) and guitarist Jeff Peterson and his trio with special guest singer Starr Kalahiki.

As always on First Friday, there will be food and drink for sale, and the State Art Museum will be open for browsing.

Where: Hawaii State Art Museum, 250 S. Hotel St.
When: 6 to 9 p.m. today

Musical ?Twilight? at Royal Hawaiian Center

Royal Hawaiian Center cultural director Manu Boyd is excited that the center?s ?Twilight at Helumoa? concert series is in full swing, with the latest offering featuring headliner Willie K, pictured (8:30 p.m.), Ke Kauoha: The Jazz Project (7:30), Hoku award-winning duo Kupaoa (6:30) and kumu hula Mapuana da Silva?s Halau Mohala Ilima (6 p.m.).

Kamehameha Schools? property offers the concert series, and hula kahiko each Saturday. ?We share with visitors the stuff we like and think what they want,? Boyd said. ?It feels like coming to a Hawaiian party.?

Intimate reggae show set for Atherton studio

Hawaii?s standout reggae band the Green, one of the islands? busiest acts, will tailor its big sound for Hawaii Public Radio?s snug Atherton studio on Saturday.

The band boasts a strong front line of singer-musicians in Caleb Keolanui, JP Kennedy, Ikaika Antone and Zion Thompson. The Green won a Hoku award this year for Reggae Album of the Year with its self-titled album, a top-seller on the Billboard reggae chart; iTunes also dubbed it reggae album of the year.

This is a chance to experience the band in an intimate setting, in contrast to appearances at the Kakaako Waterfront Park Amphitheatre and at Saturday?s KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash at the Waikiki Shell. The band has also been road-tested, completing a 10-week tour earlier this year opening for Rebelution and the Easy Star All-Stars.

Singer/guitarist Thompson said HPR on-air host Dave Lawrence invited them to play the cozy space after doing an interview with the band.

?It looked cool, so we?ll be doing a semi-acoustic set,? Thompson said, ?something we do a lot of, like playing in small bars or backyard parties. We?ll include bass and percussion, making a full sound but more intimate.

?We love doing this kind of stuff. We?ll be face to face with the fans and tell stories behind some of the songs.?

Band members will also play some newer songs they?ve recorded for the next album, due Oct. 25, and a four-song digital EP, ?Love and Affection,? that will be released Tuesday.

Where: Atherton Performing Arts Studio, Hawaii Public Radio, 738 Kaheka St.
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Cost: $25 general, $20 HPR members, $15 students with ID
