mistika: Public Speaking vs. writing

??????-?? ?????????? ?? ??????????, ?????????? ???????

Yesterday we were having a =conversation with my friend about public speaking and writing, and he referred to this article, which I found very well written and I could agree with almost everything he is saying http://www.paulgraham.com/speak.html

This conversation made me think (again) about the ways people process information, and how to make it more efficient. I am the type who needs to see something to remember. I hate when people are trying to read their emails\other texts to me, because I probably get just 40% of what is there and have to come up to them and read them again anyways. I am a really fast reader, and an efficient one ? I would remember what I read for a long time.

For the same reason, I dislike videos; let it be presentations, tutorials and mainly examples of public speaking. I do watch them occasionally, if I could not find the information any other way, OR I need a motivational push (TED talks would be an example). However, if there is a choice between printed text and a video, I would definitely go for text option.

The other reason to dislike videos is my very high standards to the video quality, meaning the performance and presentation standards. Call me old-fashioned and boring, but I strongly believe that if somebody bothered to have a talk or to make a video presentation, he or she has a responsibility to prepare. Meaning that he or she has to follow certain standards, including appropriate clothing (professional attire for business topics, smart casual at the very least for any other topic) and proper language (again, business vocabulary, variety of synonyms and, definitely, no f-words or s-words). The list could be longer, and I am not mentioning the essence of the presentation, considering it to be given. I treat this as a respect to me as a viewer, to my time and my attention. Unfortunately I have seen way too many presentations and videos lately which broke these basic (in my opinion) rules.

In a conclusion, I definitely think that public speaking has a great value and should be learned and practice by anybody. At the same time, there are very smart people who should focus on writing solely.
