A hearing center is designed to test for deficiencies in an individual?s ability to hear. Using an audiometric test, they will play tones and sounds for the subject, asking them to signal when they have heard a tone. The purpose of the test is to find the lowest possible tone at which the subject can hear. This can be used to determine if your ability to hear falls into the normal range or whether you might benefit from treatment or a listening aid. However, it is entirely possible to fail this test even if there is nothing wrong with your ears. Go into the test prepared to ensure this doesn?t happen.
Leave Your Ears Alone
It?s a common temptation to start washing and Q-Tip-ing your ears before being subjected to an audiometric test. This is a bad idea. For one thing, Q-Tips should never be used to clean anything by the very outer edges of the ear. If you?re using them to probe deeply into the ear, you?re doing it wrong and probably causing more problems than you?re solving. Getting water anywhere near your ears before you visit a hearing center could easily give you swimmer?s ear and make it very difficult to hear the faint tones.
Clear Your Mind
An audiometric test requires very specific concentration. A hearing center should be set up to provide you with a very quiet environment in which you can take the test. Only by doing so can then get an accurate measure of your abilities. But you can add to your own distractions. Having a million things on your mind, a cell phone that keeps vibrating, or even the need to go to the bathroom is not going to give you the concentration you need to pass the test. Make sure you eliminate any of these distractions before you sit down.
Ask For Clarification
Don?t just gloss over any instructions you may have misheard or didn?t understand. The technician wants to give you a test that will provide conclusive, accurate results. If you aren?t sure exactly how you are supposed to respond to a tone or if there are any other instructions you didn?t quite process, make sure you ask for clarification. You don?t want to wind up purchasing a listening aid you don?t need or want just because you didn?t quite understand the parameters of the test.
Remember, a hearing center is providing you with an audiometric test for your own benefit. Don?t try to ?game? the system to achieve an underserved passing grade, as you are only harming yourself.
