One Plant That Grows Both Tomatoes And Potatoes Trending On Reddit

Tomatoes and potatoes seem like quite different plants -- one is a vegetable and the other a starch. So how similar can they be? Well, they actually both belong to the same family of plants called nightshades. The commonality that associates them is that they (like all other nightshade plants) contain compounds called alkaloids, which these plants naturally produce to protect themselves from insects.

And because of this relationship, it's actually possible to grow tomatoes and potatoes as one plant. We learned from a Reddit post that by grafting a tomato plant stem onto a potato stalk, you can successfully grow them right on top of each other, with the vegetable above ground and the starch directly below. Who knew?

This vertical setup is pretty strange, but it really seems like an awesome way to save precious space in your garden.
