Lara Rios? ?Becoming Latina in 10 Easy Steps?

What can I say about a book that has everything? Reading the title I immediately thought it was a ?How To? story or play by play informational text about getting in touch with your roots. Then, I thought to myself- maybe I do need to be more Latina. Perhaps this book will come in handy. My Spanish fluency has much to be desired and to add insult to injury I grew up listening to The Beatles, Michael Jackson and The Bee Gees. So besides Selena, I really did not listen to a lot of Spanish or Mexican music.

I have often searched for a book like Lara Rios? that shines a light on the issues of self-identity and being an American woman with Mexican heritage. We are sometimes far removed from our roots, but this does not mean we are less of a person or less of a Latina. What is means is that we are American.

Change is inevitable and this book reaffirms that we as Latinas do not need to become an activist or label ourselves as Chicana to be true to ourselves. As women we can make a difference in various ways. Ultimatley, we are who we are and our experiences Latino/a or otherwise shape who we will become.

This book made me cry, laugh out loud, sigh with amazement, feel excited, and elated. The story follows a young woman on a path to self-discovery and what she discovered and what readers will discover is that no one can tell you who you are-only you can decide that for yourself. It is definitely a must read for any woman.
