Egypt ex-presidential candidate party to contest polls | Morocco ...

CAIRO, March 5, 2013 (AFP)

Former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh said Tuesday his party will contest Egypt?s next parliamentary elections, boycotted by the main opposition coalition.

The Strong Egypt Party is to field candidates in the staggered legislative polls which start on April 22.

Abul Fotouh told reporters in Cairo he believed parties had to ?stand up to authority? in order to avoid the monopolisation of power.

A former member of President Mohamed Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood, Abul Fotouh founded the Strong Egypt Party in July 2012 after his defeat in a presidential election a month earlier.

He came in fourth in a first round of polling, with 18 per cent of the vote.

Egypt?s main opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front which groups mainly liberal and leftist movements, announced last week it was boycotting the legislative elections, doubting their transparency.

U.S. envoy walks out of nuclear meeting over Iran's Israel remark

VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations nuclear watchdog walked out of an agency meeting on Wednesday in protest when Iran's representative accused Washington's ally Israel of "genocide", diplomats said.

Officials from Canada and Australia also left the closed-door meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) 35-nation governing board when Iran's Ali Asghar Soltanieh made his statement during a debate on Syria, they said.

They later returned to the closed-door IAEA meeting, where such action is unusual though it has happened before in other international forums.

Soltanieh was not immediately available for comment. Iran has often criticized Israeli policies towards the Palestinians. It has also said Israel would be wiped "off the face of the earth" if the Jewish state attacked it.

U.S. envoy Joseph Macmanus's walkout highlighted tensions with Tehran a few hours after he accused the Islamic Republic of a "commitment to deception, defiance, and delay" in addressing IAEA concerns about possible nuclear weapons-related research.

The European Union also used the meeting to call on Iran to stop obstructing an IAEA investigation and give the agency access to sites and documents, regardless of broader talks between Iran and world powers that resumed last week.

Some diplomats say Iran is using its meetings with the IAEA merely for leverage in negotiations with world powers which, unlike the U.N. agency, have the power to ease sanctions that they have recently tightened on the major oil producer.

"Iran is inviting further isolation, pressure and censure from the international community ... until it meets its obligations and addresses the board's concerns," Macmanus said.

During the debate on Iran, which happened before the board turned its attention to Syria, Soltanieh said the allegations over his country's nuclear work were "baseless" and suggested the IAEA, not Tehran, was to blame for the failure so far to revive the stalled inquiry.

Saying U.N. inspectors had found no evidence of any diversion of nuclear material or activities to military purposes, Soltanieh told the board: "Nuclear weapons have no place in the defense doctrine of Iran."

Macmanus accused Iran of "provocative actions", particularly the installation of advanced centrifuges that would enable it to speed up its uranium enrichment.

INSPECTOR ACCESS

Western countries fear Iran is enriching uranium to develop the capacity to build nuclear weapons and have imposed several rounds of sanctions. Iran says the program is legitimate and intended for purely peaceful purposes.

Israel - widely assumed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal - says Tehran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and has threatened pre-emptive strikes if it deems diplomacy ultimately futile.

Yukiya Amano, the 65-year-old Japanese diplomat appointed to a second four-year term as head of the IAEA on Wednesday said he his aim was to help resolve the Iran nuclear issue through diplomatic means.

"For that I need cooperation from Iran," he told reporters.

The Vienna-based IAEA has been trying for more than a year to persuade Iran to give it the access it says it needs for its investigation, so far without progress.

Iran has refused IAEA requests to visit the Parchin military site, where inspectors suspect explosives tests relevant for nuclear weapons development took place, possibly a decade ago.

Iran says it first needs to agree with the IAEA on how the inquiry is to be conducted before allowing any Parchin visit.

Last week, six world powers resumed talks with Iran aimed at finding a diplomatic settlement to a decade-old dispute that threatens to trigger a new Middle East war. The only progress was an agreement to hold more talks.

The United States, China, France, Russia, Britain and Germany offered modest relief from economic sanctions in return for Iran scaling back its most sensitive nuclear activity.

Iran called the talks a potential "turning point" but Western officials were more cautious, merely describing the meeting as "useful".

Toward a Climate & Energy Literate Society

A new report issued by the National Center for Science Education, "Toward a Climate & Energy Literate Society" (PDF) offers recommendations for improving climate and energy literacy in the United States over the course of the next decade. As NCSE's Mark McCaffrey remarked in a March 4, 2013, press release announcing the report, "We have lots of information about climate change, but much of it is falling on deaf ears"; "Toward a Climate & Energy Literate Society" is intended to provide a way forward. As the executive summary explains:

Understanding the causes of and responding to climate change is the major challenge of the 21st century. Most Americans do not understand the basics of climate change and energy or how they are inextricably connected, yet informed decisions, a prepared workforce, and risk reductions are not possible without a clear understanding of these topics. Research shows that in general those who have a basic understanding of the science are more concerned with addressing climate change (Leiserowitz 2010, 2011, Miller 2012). Moreover, improving society's climate and energy literacy should be a top priority addressed through science education and through a range of other education, communication, and outreach strategies.

To counter the scientific illiteracy standing in the way of meeting these urgent 21st-century challenges, a group of fifty leaders in the climate and energy community gathered in Berkeley, California, between December 7 and 9, 2012, to participate in the Climate and Energy Literacy Summit hosted by the National Center for Science Education. The attendees included climate, energy, education, technology, and research experts, curriculum developers, philanthropists, science journalists, representatives from climate- and energy-related non-profits and professional societies, federal and state agencies, and the National Academy of Sciences.

The goal of the Summit was to identify ways "to substantially and measurably improve climate and energy literacy to provide society and the next generation with the scientific foundation to take informed actions to minimize climate impacts and prepare for changes that are already well underway."

Participants agreed that many components already exist to forge a national climate and energy literacy initiative, but substantial challenges remain in terms of coordination, training and funding. Following are key recommendations of the Summit:

  • Create a national initiative using the Collective Impact approach for effective partnership by developing a common agenda, shared measures, engaging in reinforcing activities and continuous communication, and having a supporting infrastructure;
  • Significantly expand through private funding the availability of existing high-quality climate and energy related education, communication, and outreach programs;
  • Emphasize teaching climate change and energy topics throughout education, which is vital to establishing a strong foundation for future decisions and in fostering resilient communities;
  • Build on existing resources and frameworks, including the U.S. Global Change Research Program's Climate Literacy and Energy Literacy documents (see Appendix II);
  • Support the climate and energy-related aspects of the forthcoming Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS);
  • Collaborate with key programs and partners, including the 100K in 10 initiative, which aims to recruit and prepare 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in ten years;
  • Maximize the potential for digital learning opportunities, including online courses, educational gaming and the use of digital badges and certification;
  • Identify and address the education, communications, and outreach needs of underserved and vulnerable communities relative to these topics;
  • Conduct a national survey to determine whether, where, and how climate change and energy topics are taught in formal education; and
  • Anticipate and effectively respond to denial and manufactured doubt about climate change.

"It's easier said than done," NCSE's Minda Berbeco commented in the press release. "The challenges are considerable in terms of coordination, training, and funding." But NCSE's executive director Eugenie C. Scott insisted that the task is vital: "With climate change the major challenge of the 21st century, it is imperative to ensure that the current generation of K-12 and college students are equipped with the best scientific information available to help them make the crucial decisions about climate and energy policy that they will have to make."

Article Content:
Too many people think only of their home when they install the latest and greatest alarm system, linked to CCTV and often with a direct link to the local police station or alarm company, and completely neglect a second security barrier which will prevent burglars from entering your garden in the first place; so the installation of high garden fence panels should become a priority and your first line of defence.

2 m fence panels surrounding the complete borders of your rear garden and a gate secured with high-quality locks will put off the majority of opportunist thieves and even the semi-professional criminals won?t want to have to climb over a large fence panel to gain access to your rear garden.

Burglars and other house related criminals have a preference to act during the day time and to enter and exit your property with sufficient value in goods and as quickly and efficiently as possible. Anything you can do that slows down a burglar?s access, like the use of tall garden fence panels, will hopefully make the thief look elsewhere.

Think like a thief ? if you can

Before you replace your fence panels or perhaps install them for the first time, it helps when you take a walk around your property to see which the easiest ways to enter your garden are and therefore, how to enter your property, with the greatest of ease. It is only then that you can decide how high-quality fence panels can be installed as a deterrent around the borders of your garden.

You probably won?t own your current garden fence panels on all sides of your border. When you purchased your property your solicitor will have shown you where a T is marked against the borders to show which borders are your responsibility and which belong to your neighbours. It?s easy to do what you want with your border, but you might need to have discussions with your neighbours to ensure that their borders don?t allow criminals access to your garden. This might mean that you have to build 2 m garden fence panels on your side of their border if they are not prepared to help keep thieves away. A selection of fence panels can be found here.

You won?t want to create a fortress

When you plan how to secure your home with new fence panels, you must also remember to think about how your garden will look after the installation. Garden fence panels can be made to look very attractive in a garden, particularly if you plant bushes, trees and vines to break up a monotonous set of fence panels one after the other, and it helps if your garden still looks like a garden when you have finished your upgrade. If you feel that your plans will make your garden look more like a fortress than a pleasant area to take in the fresh air and grow your fruits and vegetables, you may have to change your plans so you can find the right balance.

Essentially the balance you are trying to find is to provide an efficient first line of defence which allows you, your family and friends to enter quite easily, but to deter, hopefully to delay and essentially, to detect any intruders who try to gain access to your property.

MSI shows off its first gaming all-in-one, the AG2712, we go hands-on

MSI shows off its first gaming all-in-one, the AG2712, we go hands-on

MSI has been churning out all-in-one PCs for we don't even know how long, but until now it hasn't marketed any of them toward gamers. And we can see why: all-in-one PCs don't have the modular, expandable design of a tower, and also aren't mobile like a laptop (not that gaming notebooks are portable, per se, but you get what we mean). Nonetheless, MSI is taking a chance anyway, in the hopes that some gamers out there would prefer a slimmer, space-saving machine, even if it meant sacrificing the processing clout you'd get from a full-fledged rig.

The AG2712, which was announced a few days ago and is on display here at CeBIT, is a 27-inch desktop that generally looks and runs like any other all-in-one -- you know, one not targeted at the gaming set. On the outside, it has a few too many glossy bits, with a see-through stand 'round back and a wide speaker grille sitting just below the bezel (it makes use of THX audio technology, but there's no subwoofer for accentuating bass tones). On the inside, it runs a mobile Core i7 processor -- Ivy Bridge for now, though a company rep staffing the event here didn't rule out a Haswell refresh later on. For graphics, you've got NVIDIA's 670MX, a laptop-grade GPU announced back in October. As it happens, it's actually standard for all-in-one PCs to pack mobile components. The difference here, though, is that this was built for gamers, and the AG2712 is also kinda thick 'round back, which defeats the purpose of building a desktop with mobile bits in the first place.

On a cheerier note, we appreciate the 27-inch, 1080p touchscreen, which will be offered with a wide-angle matte finish, as pictured above. (Okay, fine, you can get a glossy version instead, if you like.) Otherwise, the remaining specs are pretty standard: HDMI in / out, VGA, Ethernet, a multi-format memory card reader, a tray-loading optical drive, headphone / mic sockets, and six USB ports, two of them USB 3.0. If, on second thought, you don't need all that, MSI is also showing off a 22-inch model, the AG2212, which will have optional discrete graphics and starts with a Core i3, not i5, CPU. Either way, pricing hasn't yet been finalized, so although we're not keen on the idea of a gaming desktop using mobile parts, we'll withhold final judgment until we see how inexpensive it is. For now, enjoy some hands-on photos past the break.

Dan Cooper contributed to this report.

Todd Harrison Interviews Scott Reamer: The Story Of Jackson's ...

Last week I received an unexpected email from an old friend, Scott Reamer of Chora Capital. He had some exciting and inspiring news about his wife's new business venture and his young son's health, and the two were related. He wrote: Todd,

Just had to share this news with you. Megan started a potato chip company called Jackson's Honest Chips last summer -- based on the nutritional aspects that we saved Jackson?s life with back in 2004 (e.g. coconut oil and other "real fats"). These chips are fried in coconut oil. Long story short: They have been an enormous hit -- she?s sold them in eight countries (Australia and UAE for e.g.) and 44 states in just the first few months. But here is the kicker: Just Wednesday this week they were selected by the 85th Academy Awards product selection committee to be the exclusive snack food for the green room, executive suites, backstage, production offices, and dressing rooms at the Dolby Theatre this Sunday. It?s such an honor because there is no "buy-in" for placement; the Awards producers choose which brands to align themselves with based on the story, quality, etc. Since you saw in real time some of the depths that Jackson?s illness took us physically and emotionally, I thought it only appropriate that you see the way he?s been able to inspire us to turn lemons into lemonade.

Thrilled with the news, I immediately set up a call with Scott to learn more. We both felt it was a conversation and story worth sharing with Minyanville's readers.

Todd Harrison: Earlier today, I went back and read your Going Home article on Minyanville from June 2003.? So for those who have not been around Minyanville for the last decade, why don?t you just give us a brief backdrop on your family, your personal history, and perhaps where you and I first connected.
?
Scott Reamer: Sure.? Well, you and I met back in the days we both wrote at TheStreet.com and of course, you branched out on your own and asked me to write, and I thought, that?s a noble mission, so I thought I would.? At the same time, I had started my own hedge fund and wasn?t doing so well.? While I was fighting the tape, my young son, who at the time was about 12 months old or so, our first son, Jackson, came down with some sort of neurological disorder -- at least that?s what we knew it to be then -- that was slowly but surely basically taking away all of his gross and fine motor skills.? It started at that time.?
?
The genesis of that article was really sort of this terrible nexus of fighting the tape, doing a ton of research -- stock-picking and the other tools we used -- and not having it work out too well.? It was the first time I started a fund and I had just left the sell side, so there was a lot of pressure.? In parallel, Jackson?s health started to degrade for reasons that we couldn?t figure out.? We were seeing an untold number of doctors and specialists across the pediatric spectrum, and none of them had any insights at all.? They?d sort of send you home with, ?Good luck.??
?
So it was, as I said, this terrible nexus of, in effect, two very stressful times: one, a personal path, and then the other, the professional path, and each of those was an incredible challenge at the time.? The genesis of that article was that multiplicative effect of having both the professional and personal lives deal with incredible challenges at the same time.?
??

TH: As I?m now a father, I can begin to understand, or at least fathom, how helpless that must have felt.? I recall in the summer of 2003, about a year after Minyanville was launched, we were talking with increased frequency.? You offhandedly said to me, ?Why don?t you invite the Minyanville community to Crested Butte, Colorado [where Scott has a home], and in a worst case scenario, we?ll have a holiday party in August!? ?
Sure enough, that summer we had the first of our Minyans in the Mountains.? Loads of people journeyed to Crested Butte, which isn?t the easiest place in the world to get to.? I think some people are still looking for their luggage.? And that turned into a series of soir?es ranging from Minyans in the Mountains to The Critter?s Choice Awards to our annual Festivus -- it was the genesis of the benevolent spirit that has come to define the Minyanville community.?
?
I vividly remember you going through personal and professional challenges, and I was having challenges as well, having just started Minyanville, launched a hedge fund, and been wrong on the tape; I felt pretty much helpless. We commiserated together at the time, I remember; times like that are when you find out who your real friends are.?
?
Now, to this day, I consider you to be one of the smartest people I?ve ever met and I?m not prone to hyperbole.? Not a surprise you?re still mixing it up in the market after all these years, after the incredible sequence of events we?ve witnessed in the financial markets.? It takes certain capabilities to navigate that, and balance life along with it.
?
But sticking with the story, and most importantly, tell us how Jackson is doing.? Fast-forward 10 years.
?
SR: Sure.? Well, we know a lot more about the physiological processes that are going on. We still don?t have a name, a diagnosis.? We don?t know what the underlying disease process is necessarily.? We know some of the effects, of course.? So we were able, actually, to basically intermediate whatever the disease process was through nutrition, through changing what he ate.? And we started to make real progress in that in 2004, 2005, 2006, and it was just through experimentation.?
?
So fast-forward to today, Jackson is happy.? He?s still incapacitated, in a wheelchair.? He can?t speak, can?t feed himself, but mentally he?s all there.? There are no cognitive defects at all, he just can?t physically move, which is to say that he has no fine motor control.? So whatever this process is, which we now know is at least some neuroimmunological process, an inflammation, in effect, of his basal ganglia that prevents the coordination of the motor neuron signals to his muscles, it doesn?t affect him cognitively, which is fantastic. He?s happy. He laughs. He has a great time with my three other kids.
?
So that?s, of course, the blessing of this all.? It?s important to move.? It?s important to communicate, of course, but he?s with us mentally and physically, and that is an incredible return on what we thought in 2004 was a terminal illness.?
?
The interesting part is that we were able to, in effect, just sort of reverse engineer a diet that worked for him, and it was a diet that was a complete antithesis of what might be considered your standard American Medical Association prescribed diet.? And that is huge amounts of fat and protein, which we now know is, in effect, the paleo diet.? We reversed into that, or I should say we arrived at the paleo diet after an enormous amount of experimentation with what did and didn?t work, taking things out of the diet, putting things back into the diet.?
?
Not to stretch the parallel here, but I?ve got to tell you that my background in chemical engineering, and then on Wall Street, where in effect you were trying to reverse engineer the factors that affect a stock price or a bond price or a commodity price or what have you, or try to understand the macroeconomic machinations that are taking place in the economy worldwide, and then try to, again, determine some sort of investment action or speculative action to take on that, all of those skills actually helped immensely in trying to, in effect, find a diet profile that worked for him.?
?
So there are some interesting parallels, not just in the sense that the timing of my professional challenges coincided with the timing of my personal challenges, but that the skill set from one kind of transferred to the other.
