Book marketing strategies can be as individual and unique as the authors who write books, a New Christian Books Online survey shows. But Facebook, blogging and public speaking engagements are popular options.
The survey?s ?Other? category was the most frequently checked strategy, drawing responses like website, podcast, festivals, teaching workshops, odd-ball stores, reviews, newspaper and television interviews, Youtube and videos.
Of the 24 respondents, who could select more than one answer, there were 22 who chose ?Other.? Eight chose ?Facebook? while six chose ?Blogging? and six chose ?Public Speaking Engagements.?
Five survey respondents say they are still trying to figure out how to market. Five say writing more books is helpful. Meanwhile four cited ?generalized social networking? and four cited a ?John 3:16 Marketing Network launch.? Those with three responses were ?Marketing through Amazon? and ?Offering the book free to gain popularity.?
?As I continue to be published, I find that my backlist sales also grow, thus getting my name out there and more familiar,? says Lisa Lickel, author of the Map Quilt, a Buried Treasure copy mystery slated for release in April.
Authors acknowledged 1) they were caught off guard and weren?t prepared to sell their book, 2) involving others in their projects is important, and 3) there were several creative ways they are selling books.
Mike Lynch, author of After the Cross, says a music festival has been the best promotion avenue for his books. ?I am not competing against other authors,? he points out. ?Vendors typically sell food, sun glasses, t-shirts, hats, and the like. My booth is usually unique merchandise-wise, thus setting me apart from everyone else.?
Lynch also recommends printing up bookmarks at a print shop and putting your sales information on it. ?They may not buy the book then, but down the road, when they see the bookmark on their nightstand, they will hopefully buy a copy later,? Lynch says. ?Bookmarks are cheap to print, and easy to pass out.?
But Lynch doesn?t limit his efforts to these strategies. He uses Blog Talk Radio, generalized social networking, and writing more books.?No stone should be unturned,? he advises.?Be as creative as possible. The more you get your name out there the better your chances of being a successful author.?
Lisa Lickel, adds: ?Diversification in networking and selling is important; for instance, I?ve also had some good sales at craft fairs.?
She teaches workshops and mentors, being available to help others. ?Reaching out to offer something to readers is important,? she explains. ?Writing is already a lonely business. But to be successful in business, you must branch out in flexible ways to sell your products and draw in special support groups.?
When you find something that works you should stick with it, advises Pastor Bernard Boulton, author of Do You Wanna Be Made Whole? ?What I have learned about marketing is you have to try many things,? says Pastor Bernard. ?You want to know who is your target market. ?Be open to learn new strategies, but don?t abandon what works for you once you discover it.? ???????
The survey yielded many ideas to explore, but no great revelations about how to sell beoks.
?It was my goal to gather ideas from Christian authors to see which strategies are most often successful,? says New Christian Books Online Magazine Publisher Cheryl Rogers. ?I learned many of us still are working on developing a successful strategy.?
