A federal report says legal wrangling could stall efforts to find another use for a Nevada site where the Department of Energy spent about $15 billion dollars testing whether it was a suitable place to bury the nation's nuclear waste.
A Government Accountability Office report issued Monday cites ongoing legal fights over whether the Obama administration had authority to pull the plug on the Yucca Mountain project last year. It also cites competing mining claims and overlapping jurisdictions belonging to the federal energy and defense departments and the Bureau of Land Management.
No radioactive nuclear reactor fuel is entombed at the Yucca Mountain site.
A waste disposal project has been in the planning stages since 1983 at the former Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
