Source: www.bizjournals.com --- Tuesday, July 23, 2013
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby unveiled a new logo for the league as part of the conference's rebranding effort, but not before offering a stern criticism of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, The Topeka Capital-Journal reports. Bowlsby called for a complete reconfiguration of the NCAA after it faced a number of hurdles, including a situation in January when the association tried to issue charges against current University of Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith, but instead the investigation? ...

Google to unleash new Nexus 7 tablet and Android 4.3 at San Francisco event today?
There has been a lot of speculation that Google will unveil the next version of its popular Nexus 7 at an event in San Francisco being held later today.
We may even have seen what the second-generation, 7in slate looks like, courtesy of photos and video leaked to Android Central, and now a report from Taiwan indicates that the new Nexus 7 will go on sale at the end of July.
As widely expected, Google's new tablet will be manufactured by Asus, the maker of the original Nexus 7, DigiTimes reported this week. Interestingly, the Taiwan-based tech site reported that Asus had anticipated the release of a next-generation Nexus 7 in June, but Google pushed the release date back due to "concerns over first-generation Nexus 7 inventory."
That delay "greatly impacted Asustek's [financial] performance in the second quarter," DigiTimes cited unnamed sources as saying. The upshot for Asus is that the company is expecting a big third-quarter boost when the new Nexus 7 hits the market.
After shipping 5.7 million tablets in the first half of 2013, including its own branded products and first-generation Nexus 7 tablets, Asus is aiming to ship 6.3 million units in the second half, according to DigiTimes.
Last week's Android Central report also indicated that the second edition of the Nexus 7 will be made by Asus. According to a leaked spec sheet published by the site, the new tablet runs the yet-to-be-released Android 4.3, has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, and will come in 16GB and 32GB flavours.
Separately, Android Central said it had learned that Google will price a 16GB version of the tablet at $229 (?149) and a 32GB version at $269 (?175).
Some Google watchers also expect the company to release a new version of its mobile operating system today, but Android 4.3 is more likely than Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, which is rumoured for an October unveiling.

NCAA Football Youth Day at Joe Brown Park set for Wednesday
On Wednesday, July 24, youth football players from New Orleans and the surrounding areas are invited to attend a free half-day clinic led by coaches and student-athletes at Joe Brown Park in New Orleans East. The clinic is hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in partnership with NCAA Football's Youth Initiative.
This clinic, one of 20 being held nationwide over the summer, will give participants the opportunity to meet and work with college coaches and student-athletes to complete on-field agility drills, offensive and defensive training.
"This is such a special chance for youth in our area to take part in something unique, learning from top student-athletes and collegiate coaches," said Paul Hoolahan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "NCAA Football puts on a first-class event and we're thrilled to have partnered with them over the past five years."
Registration will be open to the first 300 youth attendees ages 5 to 14. Those who are interested in attending the clinic or would like additional information can visit www.ncaafootballclinics.com, or call Austin Martin of the Allstate Sugar Bowl at 504-828-2440 or Jeremy Boyce of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl at 504-525-5678.
Assistant coaches from Tulane, Nicholls State, and Mississippi Valley State, among others, will be in attendance.

MakerBot's contest winners print a better birdhouse
Like The Longines Symphonette before it, Thingiverse's army of 3D printing enthusiasts don't rest, so when MakerBot put them to the task of building a better home for wayward birds, they naturally jumped into action. Not to put too fine a point on it, but while we're still a ways from indoor plumbing and the like, the American Craftsman Bungalow is surely the sort of thing any upwardly mobile winged friend would want to call home. The first place winner gets (fittingly) an Eggbot, some PLA filament, display space at the MakerBot NY store and the admiration of birds everywhere. And if Hitchcock has taught us anything, it's that you want those buggers on your side. You can download the schematics for all of the winners in the source link below, complete with the standard whistles and bells.

LG's 55-inch curved OLED TV hits Best Buy for $14,999
Remember that curved OLED HDTV that LG was teasing way back at CES? Well, it's just begun shipping here in the US. A Best Buy store in Richfield, Minnesota is the first retailer to stock the 55-inch set, which is available beginning today for just shy of 15 grand. It's due to hit Magnolia stores at select Best Buys in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and San Antonio over the next few weeks. The curved design is intended to provide a more immersive experience for viewers, though $14,999 is a bit too steep any way you look at it. Samsung, meanwhile, has a curved 55-incher of its own -- that OLED screen arrived in Korea late last month, and is rolling out to (very) select US retailers this week, too.
